A Coish Family report
Typed from handwritten notes made by Winston Ellsworth at the St. John'sCity Library in 1998 for Freeman Fry. This is a copy of a Family history submitted by Ruth Peach to the MUN Folk Lore Archive, presumably as part of required studies at MUN. The original was a handwritten document consisting of notes and a hand drawn family descendent chart. This document will probably contain errors in spelling from the original because of the nature of handwritten documents - Freeman Fry, Campbell River, BC.CA.Information about the source file can be obtained from the below URL.

To: Maureena From Jan Wood:
I believe I may have some information regarding your Samuel COYSH - or
perhaps a relative of his of the same name who used to go to Newfoundland
for the fishing season. The Samuel COYSH family referred to below had
connections to Ilsington, an eastern Dartmoor parish.Early this year when other listers were posting queries about Devonians in
Newfoundland, I posted a list of persons with Newfoundland "links" living in
the parish of Ilsington in Devon, for which there are surviving settlement
examinations among the Ilsington Overseers of the Poor records. These
people had become dependent on the parish for poor relief, and hence they
were examined as to their place of settlement (ie to which parish they
"belonged" - and thus which parish was responsible for their support).
Among these was the following COYSH entry, which is here summarised:DRO ref: 122A/PO140
Date: 1823
Agnes COYSH, widow of Ilsington. Married 8 yrs ago in Tormoham to Samuel
COYSH who said he belonged to Ilsington, having served the latter part of
his apprenticeship with John WILLS. At different times has received
clothing, a gift to the second poor of Ilsington, since residing in
Tormoham. Husband drowned 3 months ago on voyage to Newfoundland as she
has heard and believes. The following removal order also applies to the same Agnes, widow of Samuel,
and her young children, who were ordered to be removed to Ilsington from
Tormoham (Tormoham was one of the parishes covering Torquay, a seaside town
and the home of many sailors' and fishermen's families).DRO ref: 122A/PO200 1823
REMOVAL ORDER for Agnes COYSH widow of the late Samuel COYSH, and John (6)
Thomas (4) Jane (2) and Joseph (5 months) their children, from Tormoham to
Ilsington.Any older child the couple may have had - ie 7 or 8 years old, already
apprenticed out, or working, or at sea - would not appear on the removal
order. It is also possible that the widow and family continued to live in
Tormoham/Torquay while collecting poor relief at intervals from Ilsington;
this sometimes happened. The original documents are held in Devon Record Office in Exeter, and can
usually be photocopied for a reasonable fee, plus o/seas postage. My Notes: Samuel (OPC) born 1792, and Samuel (Devon) born 1792
Samuel (Devon) presumed drowned in 1823 on way to NFLD
Samuel (Devon) married in 1815 to Agnes
Samuel (OPC) married in 1827 to Mary
Samuel (Devon) oldest child would have been 6 or 7 in 1823 when he allegedly drowned.
Samuel (OPC) oldest child b. 1831Samuel (Devon) was 23 years old when he married Agnes
If same Samuel, would have been 35 when he married in 1827 to Mary
If same Samuel, would have been 39 at birth of first child in NewfoundlandSamuel (OPC) Family Genealogical Index (familysearch.org) indicates father: Robert and mother: Susanna
