I was born in Wales. With parents named Dunne and Farrel I clearly have Irish origins. There were a lot of people with Irish names living in South Wales. I suspect that at the time of the potato famine, when Irish people emigrated West to USA, some must have gone East to Wales.
When I was eight, in the midst of the 30's depression, my family moved to Birmingham, England, known there as the 'City of a Thousand Trades''. Like many young men in this industrial city, I took up mechanical engineering as a profession, which gave me a good standard of living and much interest for the rest of my working life. In the early eighties, England experienced a severe economic depression, and like many others I lost my job. Perhaps it was all for the best, for I was recruited by a USA engineering company and came to work for them in Philadelphia. In my fifties when many are starting to contemplate retirement, I had the excitement of moving to a new country and starting a new life.
I enjoyed that area, the people were very friendly to a 'foreigner'' and there was much to be seen between the Pocono Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately I had joined an organization that operated on a 'hire and fire' basis. As a contract drew to a close, staff were laid off, but perhaps re-enlisted when another contract came along. I was not used to this life of continual insecurity, and joined the staff of a steel mill near San Antonio, Texas.
This is where we live now. After eleven years with the steel mill I recently retired, but for the moment we are continuing to live here. Although we enjoy the mild Texas winters, we dislike the unceasing heat and sunshine of the summer. Spring and Fall are the best times of the year.
I am now able to spend more time pottering in the garden, doing my little woodwork projects, and playing on my computer. Perhaps when I get bored with all this I'll dust off my Autocad program and look for some part time work.
