My Great Great Great Grandparents

George Withers was born on 14th of October 1802 in Greenham, UK and died at Goulburn, NSW on 29th of August 1878.  George was sentenced to 7 years in 1823 in the Parish of Newbury for stealing 6 sheepskins worth 10 pence and was sent to Botany Bay.  George sailed from Portsmouth on 28th of August 1823 on the "Guildford" arriving in NSW on 5th of March 1824.  George received his Certificate of Freedom in 1830, but re-offended in 1835 and was sentenced to three years and sent to Moreton Bay.  George and his sons became teamsters, working the area between Sydney and Albury.  Eventually, George became a farmer and settled in the Breadalbane area of NSW.

Susannah Lloyd was born about 1808 in Manchester, UK and died on the 25th of February 1880 at Collector, NSW.  Susannah was convicted age 19 on 25th of January 1827 for receiving stolen goods, she was sentenced to 14 years.  Susannah had two previous convictions.  Susannah sailed on "Harmony" from London on the 4th of June 1827 arriving in Sydney on the 27th of September 1827.  The voyage was terrible, the master was apparently debarred from service afterward.  Susannah received her bond in 1830.  George and Susannah married on the 4th of August 1830 at St Peter's COE in Campbelltown, NSW by the Reverend Thomas Reddall, who Susannah had been assigned to.   Susannah and George had 12 children.

Martin Delaney was born in Kilkenny, Ireland on the 15th of August 1817, he was baptised at Chapel Mill, St Canice's parish on the 16th of August 1817, it is not known when he died. Martin was a miner.

Julia Collins who was also known as Judith and Johanna was born in November 1820 at Kilkenny, Ireland and died on 29th of April 1899 at Wagga Wagga, NSW.  Martin and Julia were married in Ireland sometime before their immigration to Australia in 1840, they had 6 children all born in NSW.  The "Susan" departed Plymouth on 12th of December 1840 taking 103 days to complete the journey arriving in Sydney cove on 25th of March 1841.  Julia and Martin were bounty immigrants who were sponsored by Nicholas James and Company.  It is assumed that Martin either died or went back to Ireland as Julia married John Mee (May) on 2nd of August 1854 in Tarcutta, NSW and they had three children.

John Buchanan was born somewhere between 1806 and 1814 in Scotland, he died in Castlemaine, Victoria on the 5th of May, 1882.  John was convicted at Nottingham UK on the 14th of March, 1828 for Life for Highway Robbery.  John sailed on "Manlius" (1) departing Portsmouth on the 29th of July 1828 and arrived in Van Diemens Land on the 9th of November 1828.  John was recommended for a Conditional Pardon on the 11th of April 1846. John and Matilda married at Ouse (near Hamilton - see below for pictures of the church), Tasmania at St John the Baptist Chapel on 29th of June 1846.   John and his wife Matilda (and probably their children though they were not listed which was common at the time) travelled to Victoria on board "Clarence" departing Launceston, Tasmania on the 16th of November 1852, just three months after George was born.  John was admitted to the Castlemaine Benevolent Asylum after suffering a stroke on the 13th of December 1867 and remained there for 15 years until his death in 1882.

Matilda Magenis was born about 1824 in Belfast Ireland and died in Korongvale, Victoria on the 17th of March 1889.  Matilda was convicted of picking pockets at Antrim on the 27th of June 1842 and was sentenced to 7 years, she had two prior convictions.  Matilda sailed on "Waverley" (2) departing Dublin, Ireland on the 4th of September 1842 and arriving in Van Diemens Land on the 15th of December 1842.  Matilda was given her certificate of freedom on the 14th of August 1850.  Matilda's surname has been spelled in various ways including Magenis, Mcguiness and McInnes.  Matilda and John had 5 children, four born in Tasmania and the last born in Victoria.

Matilda had a brother Thomas who was a convict aboard North Briton in 1841, his occupation was a shoemaker.  I would love to hear from any descendants of Thomas as I have been unable to trace him further.

James Conn was born on 17th of January 1821 in Huntly, Scotland and died on 5th of June 1898 at Narrandera, NSW.  James travelled to Australia on board "Mary" arriving on 17th of January 1839 aged 18.  He was a bounty passenger sponsored by Marshall.

Maria Flood was born on the 12th of November 1831 at Sydney, NSW and died at Narrandera, NSW on the 23rd of March 1897.  James and Maria married on 31st of August 1858 at Wagga Wagga, NSW, they had four children.

Edward Mason was Jane Scott's husband and very little is known about him, though we know from various certificates that he was a seaman and fire watcher and it is believed he died in Launceston in 1870.

Jane Scott was born on the 18th of November 1830 in Dailly, Ayrshire, Scotland and died on 21st of January 1904 in South Melbourne, Victoria.  Jane and Edward married in Launceston Tasmania on 27th of March 1860 and had 5 children.  Jane married James Logan on 2nd of August 1881 at Sandridge, Victoria, they had one child Andrew Nelson Logan in 1873.   Jane is buried with 3 of her grandchildren at the Melbourne General Cemetery.

John Williams was born in 1798 location unknown and died in May 1830 in Hobart, Tasmania or thereabouts as a result of a whaling accident.  John arrived in the colony (VDL) on the 13th of March 1821 aboard the "Emerald" as a crew member.  On board also was George Meredith who Elizabeth Taylor was assigned to, so I expect this is how John and Elizabeth met.  A full account of the accident was given in "The Colonial Times" dated 21st of May 1830 - an excerpt reads, "A serious accident occurred to a Headsman, named Williams, belonging to Messrs. Mawle and Co.'s party, a few days ago.  It appears, that after striking the whale, and whilst the line was running out, the unfortunate man got his leg entangled, by which means it was stripped of flesh to the bone, and at the same moment he was carried overboard.  Ever exertion was used to save him, and at the rising of the whale to the surface, it appeared possible to snatch him from his dreadful situation, but he was still entangled with the line, and on the monster making a second plunge, poor Williams finally disappeared."

Elizabeth Taylor was born about 1793 in Manchester, UK and died on 17th July 1860 in Broadford, Victoria from lung disease.  Elizabeth was convicted on 31st March 1821 at Warwick Assizes for burglary and was sent to Hobart, Tasmania on board "Providence" departing England on the 13th of June 1821, arriving in VDL on the 18th of December 1821.  Elizabeth was assigned to Mr George Meredith after a short time in the female factory.  Elizabeth and John married on 29th of October 1823 at St Davids Church, Hobart, Tasmania.  John and Elizabeth had either four or five children, though at the time of John's death newspaper articles refer to four children being in Elizabeth's care, so perhaps the eldest Mary Ann died before 1830.

Charles Sago was born in London, UK in 1802 and died on 4th of July 1851 in Melbourne.  Charles was sentenced to life at the Old Bailey on the 25th of October 1827 for housebreaking and theft and was transported on "Phoenix" departing England on the 4th of March 1828 and arriving in Sydney, NSW on the 14th of July 1828.  Charles had no previous convictions.  Charles was assigned to William Ryrie at Yering in the Yarra Valley.  Charles died in Little Collins Street Melbourne, Victoria at his dwelling, there was an inquest.  The inquest jury returned a verdict that "the deceased had himself inflicted the wound of which he died while in a state of temporary insanity from the effects of intoxicating liquor".  Charles was buried at the Old Melbourne Cemetery (where the Victoria Market is now) in the unconsecrated section (just at the entrance to the meat market) at midnight on Saturday the 5th of July 1851.

Mary Hislop Sibbald was born on 21st of October 1821 in Edinburgh, Scotland and died in Bendigo, Victoria on the 29th of November 1884.  Mary immigrated with her sister Margaret and her sister's husband David Denham in 1841.  Mary was sponsored by Watson and Hunter and travelled on the "William Abrams" arriving in NSW on the 26th of July 1841.  There was a financial crisis in 1841-42 and it is unclear how long Mary was employed by Watson and Hunter.  Mary and Charles married on the 4th of December 1842 at St James' Church in Melbourne, Victoria and had four children, possibly more, though others are not documented.

James Dix was born in Wells, Somerset UK in approximately 1806 (calculated from his last entry on the 1871 Census) and is noted on Edwins marriage and death certificates as his father, though no birth or baptism for Edwin has been found to date.  James and his wife Temperance lived in Somerset where all their children were born and then moved to Great Malvern, Worcestershire.  The family lived in Great Malvern until his death on the 28th of December 1873. James was a Carpenter.  In 1851 after the family had moved to Worcestershire, they appeared on the census as the Smith family.  James was registered as James Smith at his death, but his probate granted in 1876 was under the name of James Dix.  It is not known why the family changed their name, perhaps the shame of a son who was a convict?

Temperance Hooper  was born in Weare, Somerset UK in May 1805 and was baptised on 29th of May 1805 at the Parish Church of St Gregory in Weare, Somerset.  Temperance had two illigitemate children, Elizabeth born 1824 and Richard born 1827, Richard was aged only two months when he died and was buried on the 4th of October 1827 at St Gregory's, both illigitemate children were baptised at St Gregory's also.

Though I have been unable to find a marriage certificate for James and Temperance, they appeared on each census from 1851 as married.  Temperance died at Glebe Cottage, Upton upon Severn, Worcestershire on the 10th of December 1881.  Edward Hannaford Woodley, her son in law (husband of Emma) was the informant.  Temperance was living with Emma and Edward at Glebe Cottage at the time of her death.
