My Grandparents

Barney Allen Withers was born in Narrandera, NSW on 14th May 1898 and died in Maidstone VIC on 29th December 1968.  Barney owned a car yard in Keilor and before that he was a Chalf cutter owner when the family were still based in NSW.

Doris Lila Mills was born at Surrey Hills, Victoria on 30th October 1899 and died in Moonee Ponds, Victoria on 26th July 1997.  Barney and Doris married in Forbes NSW on 10th November 1917 where they had a family of  5 children before moving to Victoria and having their last two children, twin boys, making a total of 7.

Walter (Jack) Charles Jones was born at Violet Town, Victoria on 7th December 1899 and died at Talem Bend, South Australia on 15th September 1951.  Jack was a Policeman in the 1920's before he was dismissed because of a assault case against a petty criminal named John Foley.  Foley had previously assaulted Jack  and I believe was set up, but who really knows.  Jack then became a shearer and died of an embolism whilst away shearing.

Maude Irene Ada Dix was born on 10th January 1903 at Oakleigh, Victoria and died July 1984 in Violet Town, Victoria.  Maude practically spent her whole life looking after children.  When Maude was 16 her mother Elizabeth Maude died in the flu epidemic of 1919 (see Great Grandparents) and Maude was left to look after 4 of her younger siblings, the youngest Allan, being only 2 years of age.  Maude then married at the age of 24 and had two children Aubrey Linden and my mother in quick succession.  The next child Shirley Margaret came along in 1936.  Shirley only lived to the age of 28, she died in 1964 from gall stones.  Maude then looked after Shirley's son who lived with her at Violet Town when I was a child.
