Daisy Hopton

(My Grandmother)

Daisy loved painting and drawing and won a scholarship to go to art college as a young woman. Though she couldn't go, she continued to paint as a hobby
all her life. She also made toys for her grandchildren, though she died when I was only 7 years old, I remember visitng her flat and the collection of toys she had.
Daisy used to sew trousers and waistcoats at home, my Dad, who used to do all the errands, would collect the material and take the finished goods back. Daisy liked things just so; my mother remembers being criticized for not cutting swede into even square pieces.

She almost certainly met my grandfather when she was very young. They lived only a few doors apart from 1909 and their fathers worked in the same factory (that of S.H. Cliff , clothing manufacturer). So perhaps they were even childhood sweethearts ?

During the 1st world war, she and her sister Lucy worked in a munitions factory.
