Walter worked at his uncle's factory S.H. Cliff & Co Ltd. at the same time as John William Cowling and the families lived within a few doors of eachother.
So my grandparents almost certainly knew eachother as children.

Additional Information

Walter Cliff Hopton played the chello. His daughters Lucy and Daisy played piano and Annie played the violin.
Annie played for an orchestra for years at Salem Chapel in Leeds.

There was some kind of a rift between Herbert and his 3 sisters shortly after the death of their father.
