I have found no records of any Cowlings in Pateley Bridge prior to 1708. So it may be that most of the Cowlings there were descended from Johnannis Cowling who was married there. Unfortunately I havevn't been able to prove where he originated.
The Cowling family seemed to do well in Pateley and by 1851 there were 13 households. Many of them were stonemasons, others became farmers.
