Died: 4-Apr-1964, of coronary thrombosis Occupation: Batman in R.A.F. during 1914-18 War Railway worker Tram Conductor/driver ? CommissionaireLawrence worked for the railways in York, cycled to work at Sheriff Hutton. He enlisted in Territorial army 27-Apr-1911 During World War I he was in the infintry of Leeds Rifles. Lost his index finger when taking sandbags to strengthen trenches. On 11-Aug-1916 he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps (which later became the RAF)and was a batman. He drove a tram between Roundhay Park and White Cross in Guisley. 4-May-1937 he enlisted in the territorial army (Royal Artillery) and went to Wellington Hill. When World War II started he was called up again, manned anti-aircraft guns at North Shields. Was sent to Orkneys & Shetland, but got Rheumatic Fever and was invalided out 1941. (This affected his heart). He joined the corps of Commissionaires (ex-servicemen as security guards) He worked for John Waddingtons of Wakefield Rd, later moved to Kirkstall. He used to help people carrying things, because he was bored watching, but he had heart attacks and had to give up work.
