INFO:
1854: John, aged 4,
embarked on the ship the "Indian Ocean" with his
parents. The ship sailed from Liverpool on 8th July 1854 and
arrived on 7th October 1854 at Portland, a trip of 90 days. The
family went onto Belfast (now Port Fairy) immediately after
disembarking, along with many other of the immigrants, by the
ship "Duke of Wellington". They eventually ended up at
Castlemaine goldfields after spending some time in Melbourne.
"The Castlemaine Mail" reported on
December 2nd, 1908:
"THE WOODBROOK FATALITY"
Post mortem examination of the body of John
Conn, the well known woodcarter, who was found dead in his house
at Woodbrook on Friday night, was made on Saturday by Dr.
Thompson, and at once disposed of the suspicion that the case was
one of suicide or murder.
Dr. Thompson found that the wound noticed by
Mounted-Constable Considine was a puncture about a quarter of an
inch over the outer side of the right eye, and also a contusion
of the right cheek and a discoloration of the eye, but that these
injuries, which he thought had been caused by a fall when the
fatal illness attacked Conn, could not possibly have caused death.
He found that death had resulted from natural causes, heart
failure supervening upon acute pneumonia and was of opinion that
the deceased had been dead for 36 hours.
He was last seen alive on Wednesday afternoon,
and his body was dicovered in his house on Friday evening by a
man named Morris Griffith, who had called at his house to see him.
Mr. T. Odgers, J.P., to whom the facts were
reported, decided that in view of the medical evidence an inquiry
was unnecessary, and gave the order for burial."
