John died on 9 May 1862
in New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island, Canada.
INFO:
1820: Emigrated
with his wife, their 5 sons and 4 daughters, and also her brother
(George Nisbet) and her mother, to Prince Edward Island aboard
the "Alexander" , arriving in May 1820 (although some
references suggest it may have been 1819). The ship probably
arrived at Rustico, following a seven week sailing from Greenock.
He had procured a document in Scotland granting him land on the
north shore of the gulf of St Lawrence, where other family had
settled. During the voyage, his papers were lost so took 100 acre
forest farm some eight miles away, on the hills of New Glasgow (possibly
staying first in Rustico for three years). The settlement at the
time had no roads, bridges, schools, churches, farm animals or
other commodities. His rent on the land was 2 shillings an acre,
per year, paid to English nobility who owned the land, although a
rent revolt later occurred because those who worked the farms
wanted to be given the option to purchase them (I don't know if
the rent revolt was successful). He was instrumental in the
founding of the Church of Christ at New Glasgow, Prince Edward
Island, originally conducting multi-denominational services in
the barn on his farm, and later building a church building. He
was described as being a "young man of sterling character,
with great intellect and vision".
