SYMBOLISM:...The charges are based on, according to “experts” in the study of surnames, possible connections with related surnames (from which “Shinn” is supposedly a derivation), and possible meanings of the surname....Estoiles - Supposedly “Shinn” is based on an old Anglo-Saxon word, “scinan”, to shine....Also used to denote my lifelong interest in Astronomy....Vair - A possibility is that Shinn is related to the surnames Skinner (thus the use of an animal skin), and also the surname “Chinn”....According to Burke's "General Armory" (GA) the Chinn arms has a vair....Griffin - Another link to the surname Skinner....In Burke's GA several Skinner arms bear a griffin....Also, my high school uses a griffin as a mascot, thus its use in my crest....Staff, raguly erect - English parish records show that “Shinn” was at one time spelled “Sheen”....Fairbairn’s Crests has a raguly staff as part of the “Sheen” crest....My coat of arms therefore, alludes to possible relationships between the surname Shinn and other surnames.
