ARMS:..Quarterly per fess nebuly Argent and Gules, a fess engrailed over all an ellipse palewise all counterchanged.
CREST:..Issuant from an ancient crown Or, a demi-Horse Purpure unguled and maned Argent, issuant from the mouth a sword blade Gold.
BADGE:..A representation of the Flying Machine of Wayland the Smith Gold.
MOTTO:..(in Greek capitals) - MAGEUHI...(One should be wise).
SYMBOLISM:..I wanted a geometrical design if possible, and one which reflected by work as a (Jungian) psychotherapist...The best thing seemed to be to adapt the idea of a mandala to a shield shape...The colours of red and white represent the psychological opposites, such as hot/cold, male/female, dark/light, good/evil, etc, etc...The quarterly division is for the four elements, earth, air, fire and water, as well as for the four temperaments, sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic, melancholic...The fess was to introduce a three-fold division, as well as a four-fold, since the interplay between three and four, as symbolising incomplete/complete, is a major part of Jung's ideas...The nebuly is for the nebulae which represent the limit of the conscious world; it is also for the interplay of conscious and unconscious...The engrailing is an allusion to the Grail Legend...The ellipse is the temenos, or therapeutic space, as well as being the "world-egg" in which all things grow...Finally, the counterchanging was for the idea of transformation and change...I realise all that sounds a bit complicated, and maybe it is, but I'm quite pleased with getting the symbolism into a fairly simple yet (I hope) striking design.
The crest has purely personal references: the Ancient Crown is now used a lot in English heraldry for antiquarian interests; the horse is for my family - my grandfather ran a livery stable; the sword is the Word of God - I'm a former priest; and the purple colour is a reference to my College.
The badge was taken from a thousand-year old stone pillar in my former church...The pillar is covered in Scandinavian carvings, and I chose it partly as an unusual but effective symbol, and partly because, with a friend, I wrote a little book about the ancient stone crosses found in this City (Leeds, UK).
AUTHORITY:..College of Arms grant...On the matriculation of the arms and crest in Scotland, Lord Lyon changed the crest slightly, the crown becoming antique, and resting on a wreath of the liveries.
