MADEWELL
Coats of Arms |
|
Under the Laws of Arms in countries following the English tradition armorial bearings DO NOT belong to all persons of a given surname and may rightfully be borne ONLY by the direct descendants of the individual to whom they were first granted or allowed - see this most helpful leaflet published by the Society of Genealogists in London. The position may not be so clear-cut in countries where there is a tradition of clan or family-based heraldry: see for example the article on this site by Michael Waas. |

Blue and gray were the favorite colors of Mary's father, Edward Everett Spurgin; hence, the use of Azure and Argent. The horse forcene and the rose allude to Edward Spurgin's early career as a horse trader and his interest is rose gardening. The lily has been used in heraldry to allude to Miriam (Mary), the mother of Yeshua (Jesus), and is used here as a cant alluding to the armiger's first name, Mary. The motto is a cant on the armiger's maiden name, Spurgin. AUTHORITY:...South African Bureau of Heraldry - Certificate No. 3262 issued on 30 May 2002. EMAIL:..mlmadewell@sbcglobal.net
