Henry III, who bore for arms, "five escallops upon the cross of St. George". Sir George Villiers, Knt., of Brokesby, Sheriff of co. Leicester, during the 33rd year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth, died in 1605, leaving five sons - (1) Sir William, created a baronet in 1619; (2) Sir Edward, created in 1620, Viscount Grandison, ancestor of the Earls of Grandison, Jersey, and Clarendon; (3) Sir John, created in 1619, Viscount Purbeck; (4) Sir George, created in 1623, Duke of Buckingham; (5) Christopher, created in 1623, Earl of Anglesey. Sir William Villiers, the third and last baronet of Brokesby, sold that estate to the Lord Keeper, Sir Nathan Wrighte, and died without issue. Sir EDWARD VILLIERS, the second son of Sir GEORGE VILLIERS, Knt., of Brokesby, was knighted at Windsor on 7 September 1616, and appointed Lord President of Munster in 1622. In 1620 he was created Viscount Grandison, and died in 1626, leaving four sons - the youngest, Sir EDWARD, was father of the first Earl of Jersey. JOHN, the fifth Viscount Grandison, was created Earl of Grandison in 1721, and left an only surviving daughter, Lady ELIZABETH VILLIERS, created Countess of Grandison in 1767. At his lordship's death the earldom expired, and the Viscounty of Grandison reverted to WILLIAM, the third Earl of Jersey. Arms as the preceding. CREST:.. Descended from Sir EDWARD VILLIERS, Lord President of Munster, Funeral Entry in Ulster's Office, 1626, the youngest son of EDWARD, the first Viscount Grandison, whose elder son, Sir EDWARD VILLIERS, Knt., Master of the Horse to Mary II, was created in 1691, Baron Villiers, of How, and Viscount Villiers, and being appointed Ambassador to the States General in 1697, was created in that year Earl of the Island of Jersey. His grandson, the third earl, having become heir male of the house of VILLIERS on the death of JOHN, the fifth Viscount Grandison and Earl of Grandison, inherited the family viscounty as the sixth viscount. GEORGE, the fifth Earl of Jersey, assumed the prefix surname of CHILD, by royal license in 1812.
