First house on the Half Breed Tract for the Newberry family in
1838
The 1840 census shows James A. Newberry and all his sons and daughters
living on the Half Breed Tract. This building was also used as a post
office
in the early years. The deed to this land was not awarded officially until
about 1853 after all the Half Breed Tract litigations were finalized.
