The exact location of the mothballed ships is the Patuxent River, Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. The Kronprinzessin Cecilie and the Kaiser Wilhelm II were considered “sister ships” At the time of their launching these 4 ships were among the largest passenger ships in the world.

Kronprinzessin Cecilie, North German Lloyd, launched 1907, 19,360 tons AKA USS Mount Vernon, scrapped 1940 Baltimore

Kaiser Wilhelm II, North German Lloyd, launched 1903, 19,361 tons AKA USS Monticello, USS Agamemnon, scrapped 1940 Baltimore

Amerika, Hamburg America Line, launched 1905, 22,255 tons AKA USS America, scrapped 1957 Baltimore

George Washington, North German Lloyd, launched 1909, 25,570 tons AKA USS George Washington, scrapped 1951 Baltimore

Many German ships were confiscated when the U.S. entered the war. After the end of the war the Kronprinzessin Cecilie was offered to the British but they turned it down. In 1930 the U.S. was billed, by Germany, for $ 74,234,000 for seized German ships. Hamburg American Line got $ 38,801,000 and North German Lloyd got $27,311,000. This was under the "Settlement of War Claims Act" of 1928. We ended up paying $ 4,287,000 for the Cecilie and $ 3,829,000 for the Kaiser Wilhelm II
