John
Hutt
I, John
Hutt, was born in the County of Westmoreland, State of Virginia, in September 5th,
1763/
In the year of 1778 I enlisted in the Artillery of the
Virginia Line for three years, under Capt. John Mazerette at Ft. Hampton, on
the James River. I was there about 20
months, when a selection of a part of the Regt. was transferred to the
Continental Establishment in the Southern Department.
I was near and within a day’s march of the disaster of Col.
Beauford by Col. Tarlton. I was in the
reserve guard when Genl. Gates was defeated by Lord Cornwallis near
Camden. We had to retreat under the
Command of Genl. Green from the Pee Dee into Virginia; and was discharged by
Capt. Christopher Roan in the City of Richmond, Va. in 1781. Afterwards served tours tours in the
Militia; among the most conspicuous was the ever memorable Capture of LORD
CORNWALLIS, at Yorktown, in Va., all of which service was performed in the
Revolutionary War, against the common enemy at that time.
