for URIAH SMITH: Per
Peter Smith article in NYGBR vol. 85 p. 7 - "Uriah was a farmer and
resided near Northfield, NJ. Edwin
A. Ely, in his "Personal Memoirs", edited by Ambrose E.
Vanderpool, 1926, stated that "Uriah [Smith] owned a tract of 100
acres or thereabout, lying on both sides of the main road, and extending
from the western boundary of the Ely Homestead Farm far down the hill
toward Morehousetown; the house in which he lived...was the residence of
his grandson Joseph Haines Smith until purchased by Arthur Smith...a
number of years ago" (p.
77). In his will, dated
Dec. 26, 1810, and proved May 11, 1816, Uriah Smith of Northfield, Essex
County, named his wife Abigail, six sons and two married daughters.
His wife and sons, William and Joseph, were named executors and
the witnesses were James Beach, and James and David Morehouse
(NJA:42:394-95). There
are others buried in the SMITH lot at Hanover who have not been
identified; some of them appear to be connected with Uriah’s family:
Rachel, wife of E. S. ELY, died May 27, 18[5]6, aged 3 [ ] years old; and Polly, daughter of John and Mary SMITH died August 31,
1797, aged 4 years and 5 months. (Inscrs. In Hanover, NJ 1894, pp
76-79). {others originally listed have been identified - KP}" NJ

SMITH. Notes
for URIAH SMITH: Not
mentioned in the Humphrey Nicols Ancestry, but named in will of father. Is
this the Uriah Smith who married Polly Hinman, dau. of Samuel Hinman and
Lois Crane? See Hinman genealogy. There is an IGI (submitter) marriage
entry between Uriah Smith and Polly Hinman in Galway, Saratoga Co., NY.
The change in location may explain why father Uriah left money
and not land to this son. Is
this the Uriah of Caldwell who had a dau. Jane who m. William Littlell?
(see Littell's Settlers of the Passaic Valley). Or is she a
unknown dau. of Uriah and Abigail?
