Timothy (5) Smith
The
son of Hezekiah (4) Smith “of the Jerseys” and his first wife Mary, Timothy
Smith was born 8 Dec 1736, according to a family record.
The place of his birth was probably NY, as his parents were baptized as
adults on 25 Dec 1735, St. George’s Church, Hempstead, Long Island.
Timothy
married but the name of his wife (or wives) is not known.
It is believed he lived in Newton Township, Sussex Co., NJ, where his
father first settled.
In September 1774, a Timothy Smith was included in the Ratables of Newton
Twp.
Timothy
was not mentioned in his father Hezekiah’s unrecorded will made 7 Jan 1782,
and was probably deceased before that date.
In his father’s recorded will, 6 Jun 1799, bequests were made to five
of Timothy’s children, one being referred to as “grandson Peter Smith, son
of Timothy” to distinguish him from another grandchild with the same name.
The other four children belonging to Timothy were not identified as such,
however, the remaining grandchildren mentioned in the will are known to have
belonged to Timothy’s siblings.
According
to Samuel Stelle Smith (NYGB Record, Vol 85, 1954), Timothy had six children:
