Obediah Smith

Obediah5 SMITH was born November 09, 1739, on Long Island and together with his younger brother and sisters, in the Flushing part of his father's property but no baptismal records for this period are available there. It is almost certain that he is the Obediah SMITH whose monument in the Northfield Baptist Church Cemetery in Essex County, NJ states that he died October 14, 1829, aged "about 92 years" As it was he would have been a few days short of ninety at his death. We do know that he lived to be eighty as on July 24, 1819, he signed his son's pension application before Judge Abraham REYNOLDS in Essex County. More, Obediah's brother-in-law and sister, Epaphras and Sarah COOK and his son-in-law and daughter, Thomas and Hannah FORCE, are buried a few feet away in the Northfield Baptist Cemetery. Northfield is the adjoining community to Canoe Brook, now Livingston, NJ., where Obediah was a farmer; also, a map by Robert ERSKINE, for use of the Revolutionary Army and now in the New York Historical Society, shows the farm of Obediah as located on the south side of the main road east of the center of the village of Livingston.

Obediah served as a Private from Essex County during the French and Indian War, enrolling May 07, 1757 and being discharged June 10, 1757 (SAR 26233, NJ No. 1183) There was an Obediah SMITH who was given a license to keep a public house "where he now lives," and Daniel TAYLOR and William ELY Jr., signed as security. As the SMITH and ELY families were related it is possible that the Obediah referred to is Obediah5 SMITH (JRB1-29 Essex Co. Docket 1772, in Gardner Coll., NJ Hist. Soc.; Pension App. S-31380 in National Archives, Washington. D.C. GSNJ:17:94; Hist. Of Chatham, NJ, p. 101).
