Jacamiah
(5) Smith, son of Peter Smith and Rebecca Nichols
The
material for Jacamiah Smith was published in “Peter Smith of Jamaica, Long
Island, and Some of His Descendants” by Samuel Steele Smith, NYGB Record, Vol.
85, 1954. For the further
generations, Internet searches produced a great deal of the material which
should be used only as a guide for further research and proper documentation.
Jacamiah
Smith was born 12 Sep 1732, in Hempstead, LI, NY, and was baptized at St.
George‘s Church there with his younger brother Uriah on 26 Jan 1736.
Likely,
Jacamiah migrated with his parents to Morris Co., NJ, between 1752 and 1754.
It is not known when or where he married.
His last and perhaps only wife was Phebe who was named in his will.
On
30 Jan 1776, Morris Co., his father Peter applied to the Provincial Congress for
New Jersey for a position in the Continental Service as a surgeon .
One of those signing the recommendation was Jacamiah Smith.
Jacamiah
moved to Connecticut Farms in Essex Co., where he was a tavern keeper.
By 1780, he was living in Elizabethtown (now Elizabeth in Union Co.)
where he owned a hotel which was the starting point for stages traveling to
Philadelphia. He took part in civic
affairs and was a Colonel in the Elizabethtown troops.
His
will made 9 Nov 1793 and proved 23
Feb 1799, mentioned his wife Phebe; his daughter Nancy Ogden and her daughter
Elizabeth Smith Ogden; two unmarried daughters Phebe and Elizabeth; and daughter
Sarah Kip. Executors were Robert
Troup, Esq. and son-in-law Isaac Kip, both of New York, and daughter Phebe
Smith. Witnesses were Hannah Miller
and Abraham Clark, Jr.
On
14 Nov 1794, a codicil was added to the will stating that daughter Elizabeth was
to be an executrix in place of Robert Troup. Witnesses were Daniel Dayton, Job S. Halstead, and Smith S.
Osborn. (New Jersey Archives:
38:344).
Jacamiah
died in Elizabeth, NJ, 16 Feb 1799, and was buried in the First Presbyterian
Churchyard there.

From
Jacamiah’s will, it is learned that Nancy and Barne Ogden had daughter

family history. According to author
Smith, they had a daughter Ann Frances Ogden who may have been the daughter of
Barne Ogden’s last wife. Ann
