HEZEKIAH (6) SMITH, SON OF OBEDIAH SMITH (and perhaps Hannah Morris) of New Jersey

In his history of the Smith families (NYGB Record), author Samuel Stelle Smith identified the Hezekiah Smith profiled here as the son of Obediah Smith.   Because of the disparities in birth years found for this Hezekiah, there have been reservations regarding the identification.  According to his pension records, Hezekiah was born about 1763.  The Gardner Files at Rutgers University give a birthdate of  Feb 1765, and his cemetery inscription indicates he was born about 1760.  In reviewing the pension file for Hezekiah, it is believed that Mr. Smith was correct.

As a youth, Hezekiah lived in Canoe Brook, Essex Co., NJ, where he was trained as a blacksmith.  In Jan 1780, he enlisted in the Revolutionary War at Canoe Brook, and re-enlisted about 1781 at West Point , NY .  He served in the New York Continental Army until 6 Jun 1783, when he was honorably discharged with the rank of Artificer.  Craftsmen, such as carpenters, nautical carpenters and blacksmiths, were recruited by the Continental Army’s Barrack Master and Deputy Quartermasters.  Because they were sometimes assigned ordnance and construction work, they were considered technicians and were given the distinctive designation “Articifer”.  A Bounty Land Warrant, #13777, was issued on 26 Aug 1790 to Private Hezekiah Smith, Artillery Artificers.  The assignee was Joseph Roades.

During the late 1700's and early 1800's, the county boundaries of New York changed rapidly.  There were sometimes as many as seven with the same name enumerated in the census making it difficult to pinpoint where in New York this Smith family lived.  In 1818 and thereafter, Hezekiah was apparently a resident of  Tompkins County .

An inventory of the real and personal property owned by Hezekiah, with an accounting of his debts, was made in Tompkins Co., shortly before he submitted an application for pension benefits on 14 Apr 1818.  He was placed on the pension roll on 26 Jul 1819.  On 26 May 1820, he appeared in the Tompkins County Court, signing an affidavit regarding need for monetary assistance and restating  his military service.  He was 57 years old and a resident of Ulysses.   "...Hezekiah Smith is a Blacksmith by trade, that he has been troubled for about thirty years with a severe cough, which has very much injured his constitution and is likewise troubled with Rheumatic pains in his knees, that he has nine in family to provide for.  Seven children, himself and wife...".   The name of his wife and children were not included.  On 28 May 1833, Tompkins Co., at the age of 71 years, he reapplied for benefits.

Sometime after 1835, Hezekiah and some Smith children began the migration west.   Most of the family who left New York were in Indiana before 1840.

It is not known if Hezekiah had more than one wife but his last was Rhoda (perhaps WYATT), who was born ca 1762.  They died in La Porte Co., IN, and were buried in Door Village Cemetery in Scipio Twp.  His inscription on their common headstone gives his name as Ezekial Smith, and one document in his pension file spells his name "Ezekiah".  He died 28 Sep 1838, at the age of  78 years.   His wife Rhoda died 17 Jul 1838, age 76 years.

In 1851, his surviving children applied for Hezekiah's pension benefits, payable to  Henry Marsh, his son-in-law.  The children were Betsey Perry, Rachel Carl, Charlotte Earle, Mary Horne, Catharine W. Marsh and Obediah Smith.

The undocumented children of Hezekiah Smith, identified by Samuel Stelle Smith and not included here, were John Smith, born 1802 and died 13 Dec 1832, a blacksmith; and Samuel Smith who, if a son, apparently died before May 1820 when Hezekiah stated he had seven children.
