Washington Hospital School of Nursing Graduates
The Washington Hospital School of Nursing has graduated many local women, and
men. These once-students became professional Registered Nurses, serving
locally and across the nation. Each page will focus on a different person.

In a college psychology class we were assigned to write our own
obituary and funeral notice - what a difficult thing to do! (Ever try
it?) I'm almost (almost!) tempted to use my obituary here.... but, since
I'm not officially dead <grin> I guess I shouldn't. So here is an
abbreviated version.
Judith Florian, Graduate of Washington Hospital School of Nursing, Native of Washington, PA
I am the daughter of Marcella Jean McGary Florian and James Francis Florian, both of
Washington who are deceased. I was born in Washington Hospital, Washington Co., Pa.
I attended St. Hilary Grade School
and was a member of St.
Hilary Roman Catholic Church as a child.
After the death of my mother when I was 14 [my father died when I was 12 yrs
old], I lived with my maternal grandparents Ruth and Howard W. McGary
until age 18, at 91 Maple Ave., Washington Pa. My parents instilled in me a love of history and community social issues, while
Grandma Ruthie taught
me the hobby of genealogy.
A graduate of Immaculate Conception High School, Washington Co.,
Pa.,
I was in the chorus and church guitar group, and sang in many school and church programs
as a soloist.
As most teens, I had worked various jobs in high school, first
with Manpower Inc., then other part-time jobs at Citizen's Library, and W & J College
Cafeteria. My sisters had each worked for Citizen's Library during their
high school days as well.
With Robert Dale Dicks I have one child, Stephanie Sue Dicks,
who grew up into a lovely and intelligent woman and now lives in Wisconsin.
I graduated as a Registered Nurse Aug. 5, 1983 from The Washington Hospital School of Nursing, Washington Co., Washington, Pa.
[Capping Ceremony Dec. 18, 1981.] I was a member of the school's Chorus during
both years. My first employer was Mayview State Hospital as a psychiatric
nurse, then I worked for several Home Care agencies around Washington, PA. In 1985,
I moved to Girard, Ohio with my daughter to take a job with Upjohn Healthcare Services,
a Home Care Company in Youngstown, Oh. My nursing
specialty was as a Home Care Nurse serving the terminally ill and and
psychiatric patients. In addition, I worked per diem shifts at St. Elizabeth Hospital,
and part time on-call night supervisor at Park View Nursing Home, both in Youngstown.
I attended Youngstown State University, Mahoning Co., Youngstown, Ohio,
pursuing a B.A. in Psychology and was a member of the East
Ohio Association for Counseling and Development, and the Ohio
Counselor Association.
I have been a long-time member of the Genealogical Association of S. W. Pa. and the South Pigeon Creek Cemetery
Association where my LANE ancestors are buried.
My sister Cathy and I helped restore part of the South Pigeon Creek Cemetery in
1993 (this is known locally as the Leatherman or Letherman Cemetery).
Having a strong interest in genealogy, I have been a volunteer administrator for message boards at
www.ancestry.com and at www.rootsweb.com,
two of the largest genealogical websites
available online. In 2005 I created two genealogy websites to share my
family research and help preserve family histories of Washington County
Pennsylvania. In 2006, I became County Coordinator for the Washington
County PAGenWeb site.
In addition to genealogy research, I have had strong interests in gifted education, child abuse prevention, literacy programs, care of the terminally ill,
and advocacy for disabled and ill persons. One of my other passions has been in
the care of animals and over the years had rescued dozens of abandoned and
injured cats and arranged for them to have new homes with caring families.
A number of these once street-cats lived out their last days in my home; I still
miss the ones who died natural deaths after being rescued. I learned a lot
about love from these animals who had lived most of their lives under bridges
and cars and who had endured much abuse from humans.
Over the years, I've made numerous self-designed twin, double and queen-size
quilts as gifts for family and friends. Throughout my life I have written articles, poems, and three books:
Honor By Love [1989, unpublished];
Lane Family History: Descendants of John Lane, Sr. by Ruth Lane McGary and Judith Ann Florian, 1990, and
The Preacher and His Kids: Descendants of Reverend Daniel Lane by Ruth Lane McGary, Judith A. Florian,
and Catherine L. Caldwell [unpublished at this time]. I am also working on
written histories for the families of Waller-Denman-Pees and the McGary family.
I
continue to research family lines, and I continue my writing through a mix of creative and historical articles for my websites.
I have three living sisters: Mrs. Thomas E. (Diana L.) Mortimer, now living in
Jacksonville, Florida.; Mrs. William (Colleen) English of Beechwood, VA; and Mrs. Kurt (Wendy S.)
Victor Terrado, of Long Beach, CA. One sister, Mrs. William (Catherine L.)
Caldwell formerly of Jefferson PA is deceased.
I hope you enjoy my web sites and gain some useful information.

The background was chosen specifically to
emphasize the matriarchal role of women in "the life" of
children and families, and the resilience of all the women of
southwestern Pennsylvania. |
