Judy,

You are bringing back memories. I grew up in Belle Vernon up on the hill which is in Westmoreland Co.; however, I do remember, as a child, how much fun it was to cross the Mon River on a ferry boat from lower Belle Vernon (Fayette Co.) to get to the other side so we could go to Charleroi. This may sound very silly but I remember how disappointed I was when the Belle Vernon bridge was built because the ferry rides stopped. I still remember where the ferry docks were on both sides of the river.

Also, I believe that the Mon River has the distinction of being one of the few rivers that flows north. I have letters written to my great-grandmother, Clara Jane (Worrell) Roley, from Clutter and Wilson cousins who said that they were going to take the packet boat to Belle Vernon to visit and would she be there at the docks to meet them. The packet boats were a mode of transportation.

I remember listening to the fog horns of the boats at night while in bed which I enjoyed hearing. Some of my Jenkins ancestors were ship owners and builders. My dad used to say that their boats traveled up and down the Mon and Ohio Rivers. Someone sent me a history of the boat the Robert Lee Jenkins which sank. My grandfather was Robert Lee Jenkins but I don't know which name came first the boat or my grandfather who was born in 1879. Boat building was done in Elizabeth, PA.

I also remember when the Mon River would overflow its banks and lower Belle Vernon was flooded so that the people had to get around in row boats. There was a really bad flood when I was in high school.

You mentioned the locks. When he was a young man, my dad worked at Lock 4 which is near Charleroi.
