OBITUARY OF WYONA S. COLEMAN:

Nov. 29, 2005, California lost one of its tireless workers, 73 year old Wyona S. Coleman who was born on a farm in Illinois.  As a Librarian since 1985 and Historian and Library Director until 2000, Mrs. Coleman worked in the California Public Library where her previous education from Southern Illinois University in journalism helped in her role as activist.  She had already led in the passage of  the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act of 1977 and was in attendance when Present when President Jimmy Carter singed the act into law.  In 1995, she co-founded and was the first board chair of the Tri-State Coalfield Citizens mining Network. A memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005 at the California Public Library 100 Wood St. next to the Monongahela River, at 2 p.m, where a huge crowd attended to hail her achievements and share their sorrow at the passing of this great leader and community activist.

The California Public Library occupies the former train station location  Rebekah Sungala,  in "Memorial service held for Coleman" (see Herald-Standard 12/04/2005) "Coleman's work in the library was... a labor of love. Under Coleman's guidance, the library slowly began to add books and now has an impressive collection of children's books, in addition to American literature, railroad and mining collections. "The echoes of what Wyona has done are so far reaching," Bennett [a friend and former co-worker] said. "Her intelligence and spirit will be with us as long as the library, and the books she collected remain intact."

Note: Taken in part from the obituary in the The Herald Standard.

The background was chosen specifically to emphasize the matriarchal role of women in "the life" of children and families, and the resilience of all the women of southwestern Pennsylvania.
