LOVELY LADY DRESSED IN BLUE
ST. HILARY GRADE SCHOOL
320 Henderson Avenue
(Church: 340 Henderson Avenue)
Washington, PA 15301
196O's
The first time a child has to stand in front of their class to
do a recitation, it is so much nicer if the child can pick their own material to
memorize. More than 30 years after my first "public speaking"
event, I can still remember the two poems I picked back in Catholic grade
school. One was religious, but the other was based on my love of
cats. I'm amazed that I was able to memorize so much of either one of
these poems. The cat poem was a child's story book; this year, I found a
used copy of the story, and could still repeat the first few stanzas. The
religious poem came from an old shiny picture with the poem on the front.
I'd like to share these 2 favorites, so here goes!

Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue
Lovely Lady dressed in blue -------
Teach me how to pray!
God was just your little boy,
Tell me what to say!
Did you lift Him up, sometimes,
Gently on your knee?
Did you sing to Him the way
Mother does to me?
Did you hold His hand at night?
Did you ever try
Telling stories of the world?
O! And did He cry?
Do you really think He cares
If I tell Him things -------
Little things that happen? And
Do the Angels' wings
Make a noise? And can He hear
Me if I speak low?
Does He understand me now?
Tell me -------for you know.
Lovely Lady dressed in blue -------
Teach me how to pray!
God was just your little boy,
And you know the way. |
By Mary Dixon Thayer, who wrote more than
one poem for Our Lady.
This prayer-poem was popularized in the 1950s by Archbishop Fulton Sheen.

The background was chosen specifically to
emphasize the matriarchal role of women in "the life" of
children and families, and the resilience of all the women of
southwestern Pennsylvania. |
