The Kitten Twins
ST. HILARY GRADE SCHOOL

196O's
The first time a child has to stand in front of their class to
do a recitation, it is so much nicer if the child can pick their own material to
memorize.
More than 30 years after my first "public speaking"
event, I can still remember the two poems I picked back in Catholic grade
school. One was religious, but the other was based on my love of
cats.
I'm amazed now that I was able to memorize so much of either one of
these poems as a child. The cat poem was a child's story book; this year, I found a
used copy of the story, and could still repeat the first few stanzas by heart. The
religious poem came from an old shiny picture with the poem on the front.
I'd like to share these 2 favorites, so here goes!
| The Kitten Twins
There were two little kittens
with eyes of blue
One was named Twinkle
And one was named blue.
They tried to be good
And do what was right
But they got into mischief
From morning to night.
When Grandma was knitting
And dropped her yarn ball
They snatched it and dragged it
Way out in the hall.
It rolled down the stairs
Like a fire-ball of red
With the twins rolling after it
Heels over head....
The poem continues for 20 pages, but since it is under copyright,
I'll have to stop here. |

The background was chosen specifically to
emphasize the matriarchal role of women in "the life" of
children and families, and the resilience of all the women of
southwestern Pennsylvania. |
