Welcome!  These six (6) web pages detail my research concerning the DAR Application of Mrs. Emma McKinley Nease on the record the Rev. War Soldier, John Lane Sr., of Bedford Co., PA. Copies of original documents will be included when possible.  This DAR application has led many researchers astray on the genealogy or family history for  collateral surnames and LANE, including research in Washington Co., PA, Bedford Co., PA, Frederick Co., MD, Carroll Co., OH, and Ripley Co., IN.  ANY proof which supports OR contradicts my research  is gratefully appreciated.  An additional page will address what you can do if you find a DAR Application is inaccurate.

SECTION SEVEN

SECTION 7: MY CONCLUSIONS

            I have pondered particular information which Mrs. Nease wrote in her letters of inquiry, questioning what her source had been for the information.

            For instance, Mrs. Nease wrote that both father and son were buried probably at Frederick Co., MD, with one having died on the National Pike (or Route 40, the National Road) that goes through Washington, PA. Although I cannot be sure, it is my belief that Mrs. Nease or her researcher in Frederick Co., Md. possibly confused the identities of 2 other men named John Lane who indeed die and were buried in Frederick Co., MD.
            If I am correct about the 2 men in Frederick Co., MD, as well as in the research about the 2 men of Bedford Co., PA. and that of my ancestor in Washington Co., PA and his son in Indiana, this means Mrs. Nease confused 6 different men and combined them into 2 generations as being of one family.

            My predominant concern is to correct the historical data being given out by the NSDAR. Mrs. Nease's application has led at least 3 family researchers of 3 branches of my family into the dead-end of the Bedford Co.,
PA. John Lane Sr. Each of us were initially excited by the idea that we would be able to "prove" our ancestry now, only to find that public documentation did not support Mrs. Nease's application.

            There is no way to correct the fact that this erroneous information, through a variety of means, has probably become widely circulated across the U.S. over the last 60+ years. But, I would like to respectfully request that Mrs. Nease's application be reviewed and closed from further circulation to the public.

            It is also my desire that a NSDAR notation be made onto the record and application of Anna Lenore Myers, NSDAR # 547234 under the children's names that the son, John Lane, may not have been born at the time indicated, since this was information copied from generation # 3 on Mrs. Nease's application.

            I wish that my family was able to provide to correct data for our Revolutionary ancestry, but at this time, we do not have the necessary proof for ourselves, let alone proof that would publicly hold up to necessary scrutiny. We are diligently researching several possibilities, and we hope to have identified the correct ancestor in the near future.

            Thank you for reviewing this lengthy material. I will look forward to hearing from your office as to whether you concur with the data presented, and what actions you plan to take, if any, regarding this matter.

Sincerely yours,

QUESTIONS RAISED DURING OUR RESEARCH & OUR REASONING BASED

ON RECORDS AND OTHER INFORMATION

We have looked at many aspects of this DAR application and have done extensive thinking to either prove and or disprove this application. I will include notes on the thinking process we have gone through in considering every aspect of the DAR application we can think of. I said at the beginning of this post that Emma McKinley Nease seems to have confused 5 different John Lanes.  Below are lists of questions we raised during our research and our conclusions.

REASONS THE DAR LIST MIGHT BE CORRECT:
1. Mrs. Nease HAD to have some idea that John Lane Sr. came from Frederick Co., MD

POSSIBLE ANSWER: Family stories?
Or, did she confuse the stories? Samuel Flowers had been a stagecoach driver on the Pike between Washington County, PA and Frederick Co., MD.

2. Mrs. Nease HAD to have some idea that John Lane, Sr. was married to Catherine Baker.

POSSIBLE ANSWER(S):
(a). Family stories?
(b). The Bible record that Grace Deal SAID the family burned after Emma died?  NOTE: I just find this family statement about their family Bible SO hard to believe, especially since a U.S. Flag in the usual triangular display case AND the DAR Plaque were both predominately displayed side by side on the wall behind her living room couch!

3. Mrs. En»a Nease COULD have had a Family Bible. (But where is it?)

POSSIBLE ANSWER(S):
(a) Grace Deal said it was burned; maybe they burned it because it did not match the information Mrs. Nease gave to the DAR?
(b). There was never any Bible record; Mrs. Nease maybe stretched the truth?

4. Mrs. Nease's mother, Rebecca Flowers McKinley, was still living at the time of the DAR Application.  Could Rebecca have given some of the information?

POSSIBLE ANSWER(S):
(a). Yes but she was quite elderly; could she have gotten confused?

5. Who said John Lane Sr. -- OR -- the Rev. Soldier of Bedford Co. -- died ON the National Highway??  AND, who told her that both Lanes, father and son, both died on the National Highway??

POSSIBLE ANSWER(S):

(a) Could it be that Samuel Flowers, stage coach driver on the National Pike,  had died on the National Pike during one of his trips??  We know where he is buried but not the details of his death.

(b).  What was the cause of death of Samuel Flowers' son, John Thomas Flowers?  Did John T. ever run the stagecoach with his father?  John T. died in very young adulthood.  We know where he is buried but not the details of his death.

(c). Could Mrs. Nease or someone confused whatever stories or details the family knew?

(d). Could Mrs. Nease have learned about the two (2) men named in Frederick Co., MD and just assumed they were our line?

6. Who TOLD her that the father and son both died on the National Highway?

POSSIBLE ANSWER:
(a) Again, Rebecca Flowers McKinley was still living, but born in 1846 (obituary & Census) she was 87 years old in 1927; how do we know her physical and mental condition?  Maybe she told the Flowers' history/stories in response to questions about the Lane history?
(b).  See question # 5 above.  Could the story be about Samuel Flowers and HIS son?

7. What IF "our" John Lane was the son of the Bedford Co. John Lane -- He then would have had to be married to Sarah (Davis maiden name) Lane prior to 1849 (per deed info.).

DEFINITE ANSWER:
            This can't be possible because of the records and other proof that our John was married to Catherine BAKER, and that there is proof that John Lane Jr. of Bedford Co. Pa was married to Sarah Davis.

OTHER REASONS WHY WE THINK THE DAR APPLICATION IS DEFINITELY WRONG:

REASON 1. The National DAR papers (letter of Mrs. Nease, notarized) says she copied from the Bible record of Mary A. Flowers and Mary Lane. Was she talking about ONE or TWO Bibles?

POSSIBLE ANSWER:
(A) Bible of Mary A. Flowers:
1. Mrs. Marianne Deal Smith Taylor, granddaughter of Mrs. Nease, states she knows of no Bible record.
2. Mrs. Grave Nease Deal, at age 87, told me that the Bible was burned after Mrs. Emma Nease's death.

(B) Who was Mary Lane?  Which one was alive when Emma was alive?
{Emma McKinley Nease was born July 30, 1875 and died January 1, 1968. }

 Who were the Mary Lane persons we know of in the family prior to or living at the time?
1. Mary Lane Jane Bail b. Nov 15, 1833 and d. Feb. 15, 1896
My Grandmother, Ruth Lane McGary, states that this Mary probably did not have a Bible because the 2nd wife of Rev. Samuel Wishart Bail <she was Gurney Simpson Bail> did not have a Bible record from the Rev. S. W. Bail ancestry.
2. Anna Mary Lane Garber b. Sept. 5, 1869 d. Aug. 6, 1941
My Grandmother, Ruth Lane McGary, knew Mrs. Edna Hootman, a descendant of this family, and Edna Hootman had no Bible record.
3. Mary Bell Lane Guthrie b. Mar. 7, 1888 d. Mar. 24, 1960
She was the youngest child. We had copied from the Bible of Jane Catherine Denman Lane, a descendant of this family.  This Bible does not support Mrs. Emma Nease's DAR application.
(C) We have not located any other living member of the FLOWERS family who has had any Bible record, or who knows the ancestry of their family -- yet.
(D) COULD she have known a descendent of the MARY LANE listed on the DAR application as one of the children of the Rev. Soldier -- ?? This IS a possibility I guess!
(E) The Question remains: WHO was this other "Mary Lane" that Mrs. Nease refers to??

REASON 2. IF Mrs. Emma McKinley Nease had a Bible record, WHY didn't she have the correct dates for these:
1. John Lane, "Sr.'s" death date of Dec. 22, 1844 (obituary) in Washington Co., Pa.
Why would she first believe his death date was 1863?
(I think this the death date of the son in Bedford Co., PA ?)
Why would she later change this to 1843 ? (Because the Rev. Soldier died in 1843!  Did she get confused, with the death year of the Rev. Soldier in Bedford ?)
Did her Bible record say 1843 in ERROR, but she read it as 1863 ??
Did she just guess about the date?
Did someone tell her the date, but the family member was mistaken ?

3. The right death date for the Rev. War Soldier. (1843)

4. "Our" John Lane, Sr. of West Bethlehem Twp. died Dec. 22, 1844 at "about 70 yrs." of age. This *could* be (but unlikely is) off by 5 - 10 years either way.  The following dates apply to our John Lane, Sr.
(1.) 1844 death date                         1805 marriage date
         - 70 yrs.                                  1774 ? birth year ?  [NOTE: We think b. 1780)
(equals)1774 birth year                     (equals) 21 yrs old when married

or - (2). DAR application says he was born about 1779
1805 marriage date                           1844 death year
- 1779 DAR birth                              1779 DAR birth
26 at marriage                                     65 yrs at death

3. If 21 at marriage date, he would have been the following ages when his children were born:
a). John Jr. b. 1804 (Bible)      John Sr. was 20 yrs.
     Joseph b. 1807                   John Sr was 23
     Daniel  b. 1810                   John Sr. was 26
     Mary   b. 1818                   John Sr. was 34  (DAR says b. 1820; John Sr. would have been 36)

4. If 26 in 1805 (based on DAR date of birth):
                                                        25 in 1804
                                                        28 in 1807
                                                        31 in 1810
                                                        41 in 1820

5. IF DAR is totally right and if this is our line, these are the dates and ages for Bedford John Lane and "our" John Lane:  (for comparison)

EVENT Rev.Soldier John - age Our John - age

FACTS ABOUT THE JOHN LANE WHO MARRIED CATHERINE BAKER IN FREDERICK CO., MD ON JANUARY 23, 1805:

1. It is TRUE that this John Lane (parents unknown ) married Catherine Baker (daughter of Joseph Baker and Mary [possibly Sowers] Baker, of Libertytown/Taneytown areas, Frederick Co., Md. on 23 Feb. 1805.
2. It is TRUE that this John Lane and Catherine Baker apparently move in approximately 1809 to Amwell Twp., Washington Co., Pa. after Joseph Baker sells his property in Frederick Co., Md. and we deduce that John Lane, wife Catherine Baker Lane, and their children are living in the household of Joseph and Mary Baker in the 1810 Census, Amwell Twp., Washington Co., Pa.
3. It is TRUE that a John Lane appears on a Road Petition in Washington Co., Pa. in 1809 appealing for a road on the Baker property.
4. It is TRUE that this John Lane (Sr.) (m. to Catherine Baker) buys land from John Haines {date:: } in Washington Co., Pa. adjoining the land of his father-in-law, Joseph Baker.
5. It is TRUE that this John Lane and Catherine Baker Lane had 4 children: to wit,
#1. John Jr. born 1804 (per John Jr's own Bible record);
#2. Joseph Lane b. 1806 (per Joseph Lane's Bible record);
#3. Daniel Lane b. 1810 (per Bible record);
#4. Mary A. Lane b. ca. 1818 Census (1820 from Emma McKinley Nease's DAR application, and not proven).

6. It is TRUE that John Lane of Washington Co., Pa. lived in Amwell and later West Bethlehem Twps, Washington Co., Pa. until his death Dec. 24, 1844.
            It is not known if Catherine Baker Lane actually died ca. 1822 (as given on the DAR application)

INTERESTING CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE AND FACTS:
1. In the Bedford County documents and research on <Rev. Soldier> John Lane, Sr., there is never any mention that a son lives in Washington Co., Pa. (True Stories; Deeds; Wills; Accounts; etc)
2. In the Washington Co., Pa. Tax Lists and documents, there is never any indication that John Lane Sr. <husband of Catherine Baker Lane> has inherited any lands or personal property of the John Lane Sr. <Rev Soldier of Bedford Co., Pa.>. Nor did any of the children or children's spouses (i.e. the children of John Lane Sr. and wife Catherine Baker Lane) show any inheritance or increase in wealth/personal property. (Tax Lists; Account)
3. At no time does it appear that John Lane Sr. <husband of Catherine Baker Lane> leaves Washington County, Pa. to Administer the Will of his **supposed father**, the Rev. War Soldier John Lane, Sr.
4. John Lane Sr. of Washington Co., Pa. is cited in his Obituary as being "aged about 70 years" so he would have been approx. 69 yrs. old at the time of the Will Probate of the Rev. Soldier John Lane, Bedford Co., Pa. (Obit of John Lane Sr. of Washington Co., Pa. published in "The Reporter", Jan. 11, 1845. No Obit found for John Lane, Sr. <Rev soldier of Bedford Co., Pa.> who died prior to March 1843.

SHORT REVIEW OF THE MEN INVOLVED IN THIS DISCUSSION:

As stated, we think Emma McKinley Nease confused 6 (and maybe 8) different men all named John.  Summary of the "John Lane" men follows next.

ONE LINE:

1. John Lane Sr., Rev Soldier Bedford County, Pa. who married Catherine Price, and
2. and his son John Jr. who married to Sarah Davis  - descendants have more documentation showing that Jr and his wife lived and died in Bedford Co., PA

-- unrelated so far to the other lines

SECOND DIFFERENT LINE:

1. Our John Lane Sr. married to Catherine Baker in Frederick Co., Md. and later moved to and died at Washington Co., Pa.
2. His son was John Lane JR, son of John Lane Sr. and Catherine Baker Lane
John Lane Jr. born 1804.  Census of John Lane Sr, Washington Co., PA 1810, 1820, 1830 shows males who fit sons John Jr, Joseph and Daniel Lane.  But the earliest record of John Jr. and Joseph BY NAME are when they appear in the Washington Co., Pa Tax list in 1832 for Amwell Twp.  They are listed as single men, but they soon marry.  Between 1832 and 1837, they are both married and John moved to Shelby Twp., Ripley Co., IN; Joseph moved to Carrollton, Carroll Co., OH.  (We don't know if there was already family or collateral family in those locations.)

-- unrelated so far to the other lines

THIRD DIFFERENT LINE:

1. Two John Lane men -- or 1 man who was re-interred? --  from his front yard to a cemetery - Frederick Co MD -- unrelated so far to the other lines

FOURTH DIFFERENT LINE:

1. John Lane of West Middletown, Washington Co., PA with son John -- unrelated so far to the other lines

Documents supporting my research - coming by 2006

ATTENTION INTERNET READERS

            Over the years, I have been contacted by many people who were trying to research based on Emma McKinley Nease's information.  ALL of us have concluded the DAR Application is wrong.

            Because of limited funds, I was never able to share all the documents concerning my research on this problem.   Between 1984 and 1990, I collected documents (for all 8 John Lane men) from: Frederick Co., MD, Washington Co., PA, Bedford Co., PA, Carroll Co., OH, and Ripley Co., IN.  Overall, I think I've done a superb job of putting together copies of original records that support my case, but, as in all large projects, something may have been overlooked.  I am hopeful that others may have found additional records that can further support my claims.

            I hope within the next 3 to 6 months to scan ALL the documents I have concerning this research.

            YOU can help document the facts about the men I have listed.  I welcome ALL additional documents you might have from your research on this DAR Application --  Please send me an email if you would like to add your documents.

            Also, please leave your comments about this research by clicking on the link below.  (If your comments are on topics or research other than this DAR Application, please use the Guestbook.

The background was chosen specifically to emphasize the matriarchal role of women in "the life" of children and families, and the resilience of all the women of southwestern Pennsylvania.
