Welcome!  These six (6) web pages detail my research concerning the DAR Application of Mrs. Emma McKinley Nease on the record the Rev. War Soldier, John Lane Sr., of Bedford Co., PA. Copies of original documents will be included when possible.  This DAR application has led many researchers astray on the genealogy or family history for  collateral surnames and LANE, including research in Washington Co., PA, Bedford Co., PA, Frederick Co., MD, Carroll Co., OH, and Ripley Co., IN.  ANY proof which supports OR contradicts my research  is gratefully appreciated.  An additional page will address what you can do if you find a DAR Application is inaccurate.

SECTION 6 OTHER INFORMATION - HOW DID MRS. NEASE GET HER INFORMATION?

THE BIBLE RECORD?
Be aware that I personally talked to Mrs. Nease's daughter, Mrs. Grace Nease Deal, prior to Mrs. Deal's elderly death. I asked her if I could have a Xerox of the family Bible record which is stated as part of the evidence on Mrs. Nease's DAR application. Mrs. Deal told me the bible was burned by the family after her mother (Mrs. Nease) died!

[Why would the family burn the Bible?] I was in contact with Mrs. Deal's daughter, Mrs. Marianna Rebecca (Deal) Smith-Taylor, in the 1980s who stated there is "no Bible in existence now."  Mrs. Marianna Rebecca (Deal) Smith-Taylor stated she had never seen a Bible or such a record.

Therefore, there is no way to completely verify where Mrs. Nease obtained some of her information. Whether there was ever a Bible record or not remains a mystery.  The NSDAR indicated to me that such a record copy, if submitted, would have probably been returned to Mrs. Nease back in the 1920's.   In any event, the NSDAR nor anyone else has the Bible record.

I am trying still to trace the FLOWERS family to living descendants who may possibly have a record or other proof of my LANE family ancestry.  [I already researched the families of John Jr. and of Joseph and of Daniel Lane, down to living descendants on each line.]  So far, I have been unsuccessful in locating any living descendant in any of these brances who can help us unravel our lineage.  I acknowledge the possibility that Mrs. Nease may have been privy to stories of "family tradition" and word-of-mouth history that gave her some of the information that we have been unable to prove or disprove. At the time of Mrs. Nease's application, her mother (Mrs. Rebecca Flowers McKinley) was still living (although quite old). Possibly Mrs. Nease obtained information from her mother, or other relative in the family. These persons, however, are long since gone to this inquirer/researcher.  [If she got information from Rebecca, maybe what Rebecca said got twisted... or maybe she was confused?]

Bibles in the LANE Families

We have searched for the earliest Bible Records in the Lane family.  Here are the ones in the Daniel Lane branch:

In addition to the Bible of Jane C. Lane in the possession of Barbara Wolfe, daughter of Walter Lane, who gave the Bible to Barbara, there have been other Bibles in the following families:

John Jr.'s; Joseph's; and several in the Daniel Lane branch which are from Edna Hootman, from Linda Stanley [R. J. Lane branch], and from the Jane C. Lane branch.

Also, Minnie Lane McCausland's Bible contained a one page sheet starting with the marriage of Robert J. Lane to Sarah Ellen Moore. [There was no Bible in the Bail family and this writer was told by a descendant in the Flowers family that they had burned their Bible.]

It is interesting to note that the deaths page in these Bibles start with "John Lane, Sr.," as do all the other Bibles noted. Primarily it seems very odd that none of the Bibles list Catherine Baker Lane's name at all, and each simply begin with the entry "John Lane Sr. died Dec. 22, 1844."

The Bibles in the Daniel Lane branch also do not mention Daniel's brothers, i.e. John Jr. in Indiana and Joseph Lane in Ohio or their sister, Mary A.  This may indicate a sort of trend or tradition within this family that each Bible simply listed John Sr's name, death date, then went on with the owner's information.    See "The Preacher and His Kids: Descendants of Reverend Daniel Lane of Washington County Pennsylvania -- Focusing on the family of Daniel Lane and Anna England Lane; with a short history of known information of the LANE family in Frederick Co., Md. [until 1809], and in Washington Co., Pa. [from 1809 on], then spreading across the nation [early 1900's]."  By Ruth Elizabeth Lane McGary and Judith Ann Florian with Catherine Louise Caldwell. Copyright 1993, First Printed 2005; All Common Law Copyrights Protected.

So, how did all this get mixed up? Where did the information come from? Emma McKinley Nease apparently started her research just like all of us do - writing letters to find information.

Mrs. Nease had written a letter (enclosed) on Sept. 26, 1925 to the "Commission of Pensions" in which she mixes up 2 generations as being married. In her first 2 paragraphs, she has the Rev. Soldier being married to Miss Baker, but Miss (Catherine) Baker actually was the wife of a different John Lane, "Sr." who is my ancestor. Again, this tends to show that Mrs. Nease did not have any personal knowledge as from a Bible record to prove her ancestry. I intend to show that Mrs. Nease obtained some of the information used on the application from the replies she received from the Pension Office, or other sources.

Gentlemen-
[first paragraph] Will you please furnish me with war record of John Lane, perceptated (sic) in the war of 1775.
[second paragraph] He lived in Philadelphia after the war and married a Miss Baker only daughter of a Quaker family and lived on Chestnut St., Philadelphia.
[third paragraph] He later moved to Frederick, M.D. where he owned and operated Copper Mines. Think he was buried at Frederick M.D. as later his son John Lane (the second) died on the National Highway near scenery Hill
Washington Co., Pa. and was buried also at Frederick M.D.
[fourth paragraph] Any information that can be furnished me we be gratefully appreciated also any expense it would incur I will be very willing to remit the same.

NOTES ON FIRST LETTER:
1. We believe Mrs. Nease was getting information from an elderly family member such as her mother, Rebecca Flowers McKinley, but that this information was confused.   OR, Mrs. Nease got information from hired researchers who were mistaken.  Or a combination of secondary sources, like hired researchers.

Here is more information to help readers here understand the Flowers Family:

The 4th child of John Lane Sr. and Catherine Baker Lane was Mary A. Lane who married Samuel Flowers. Samuel Flowers and Mary A. Lane Flowers had a son named John Flowers. Samuel Flowers was a well-known stage coach driver on the National Pike and it is said he died on the Pike.  Possibly his son John Flowers was also killed on the Pike. Neither, however, seem to have been buried in Frederick Co, Md.  (John Flowers is buried in South Pigeon Creek Dunkard Baptist-German Baptist Church Cemetery; Washington Co., PA; tombstone still present. We suspect his father, Samuel Flowers, is also buried there with his wife, both in unmarked graves per information of the late Mr. Ray Knestrick, Sr., Washington Co., Pa. newspaper columnist.

2. We think, therefore, that Rebecca Flowers McKinley was confused because the John Lane Sr. <husband of Catherine Baker Lane> Obituary does NOT say he died on the National Pike. (The Obituary is written out in Section 3 of this letter.)  Samuel Flowers obituary also does not mention anything about dying on The Pike.  But, he did operate a stagecoach "on the Pike."

3. HOWEVER, John Lane Sr.'s HOME **was** ADJOINING the National Pike AND it is TRUE that the property of John Lane and Catherine Baker Lane is located near Scenery Hill, Pa. (Per Deed and Title Search done by Judy Florian; Land Plot Maps drawn by Linda Stanley based on Mets and Bounds in these Deeds, then compared to existing Land Plat books from 1800's up to Aerial Maps of the 1950's for that same area.) [At first, the land touched the National Pike, but the Pike was "moved" several times over the years, so today, the
LANE land sits back off the National Pike. Present Owners are the LAWRENCE family.]  Samuel Flowers and family at one time also lived on land beside The Pike.

4. Where John Lane Sr. <Rev Soldier of Bedford Co., Pa> is buried is not known. The only 2 John Lanes found to be buried in Frederick Co., Md.. are NEITHER John Lane Sr. <Rev. Soldier Bedford Co., Pa> NOR is my John Lane Sr. <h/o Catherine Baker Lane, Washington Co., Pa> one of the John Lanes buried in Frederick Co., Md.

The John Lane buried at Frederick Co., Md. is :: a). John Lane, "age 78 y, 30 March 1848; buried on his farm" per Western Maryland Genealogy July 1991 Vol. 7, Number 3, page 116, also listed in Names In Stone Vol. # 1 by Jacob Mehrling Hoidcraft, Baltimore Genealogy Co., Inc., 1985, p. 694.  "Lane, John 14 Jan 1771 - 30 Mar. 1849 (Fredk. Mt. 01. 200) w Barbara 30 Mar. 1841 age 64 (Fredk. Mt. 01. 200)" and "Lane, John 14 Jan 1771 - 30 Mar 1849 (Fredk. Mt. 01. 200)."   [To be honest, I am wondering if the "two" Johns listed are not actually the same man, with the second listing being the re-interment from the farm to the cemetery??]  Other Lane names beginning with "J" (possible Johns?) listed in Names in Stone is "Lane, J. 27th N. Carolina CSA 27 Nov. 1862 no age (Fredk. Mt. 01. 200)" and Lane, Capt. J. T. 4th Georgia CSA 23 July 1863 no age (Fredk. Mt. 01. 200)" - all listed on page 694.

5. Mrs. Nease wrote: "He lived in Philadelphia after the war and married a Miss Baker only daughter of a Quaker family and lived on Chestnut St., Philadelphia."

5A.  Re: the John Lane Sr of Washington Co., PA -- We have no evidence of John Lane living in Philadelphia, although another family story regarding the family coming from Philadelphia is written about in a history on one of John Lane Sr's grandsons (Jacob D. Lane, from Carroll Co., Ohio) -- but no matter what has been tried, we cannot prove or disprove a connection to Philadelphia.  Also, an old Washington Co., PA newspaper on an unrelated item mentions someone born at "Old Philadelphia, Washington Co., PA" so I wonder if there used to be a local place referred to as "Old Philadelphia" but in Washington Co., PA?  This would easily account for the several references in our family stories that say our family lived in Philadelphia.

Returning to Mrs. Nease's Application.....

HOWEVER, I suspect that again, Mrs. Nease got something confused - it is my belief that Mrs. Nease's mother or grandmother at one point possibly lived on Chestnut St. in Washington Pa., and that fact maybe somehow got confused and written as Philadelphia. I've attempted to verify any Philadelphia connection, but have not yet found anything connecting my family to that city, except one record that says Daniel Lane b. 1810 was born there - but the parents were already in Washington Co., Pa. at that time, unless Catherine Baker Lane had for some reason traveled to Philadelphia?

We do not know for sure where our John Lane Sr. is buried, but suspect it he is buried in one of the following:
(a) in an unmarked grave in Ten Mile Church of the Brethren (built 1832), or;
(b) in the cemetery of the daughter church, South Pigeon Creek Dunkard, or;
(c) on the property owned at that time by the (c) Lanes or (d) Bakers (later owned by the Dagers) in Amwell (changed to W. Bethlehem Twp.), Washington Co., Pa.  It is more likely that he is buried on the land once owned by Joseph Baker.

THE SECOND LETTER IS A REPLY TO MRS. NEASE FROM THE PENSION RECORDS OFFICE:

Madam:
[first paragraph] I have to advise you that from the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim 8. 8042 it appears that John Lane was born February 22, 1 (illegible) [under the typed year is handwritten "1756" ..the
5 is not clear, could be another number] in Baltimore County, Maryland.
[second paragraph] While a resident .... [this section repeats word for word the information listed on the DAR application of Emma McKinley Nease--she likely copied the letter directly to the DAR app.]
[third paragraph] [repeats what is said further on DAR application of Emma McKinley Nease-- she most likely copied the letter directly to the DAR app. but she left off the last sentence of this paragraph which reads as follows]
It is not stated (whether ?) he was (ever?) married.
[fourth paragraph] The above (illegible) is the only soldier named John Lane of Pennsylvania and Maryland (illegible) the Revolutionary War records of this (department ?).
[typed] Respectfully
[typed] (first & last name illegible)

NOTES ON SECOND LETTER:
1. [repeats what is said word-for-word on DAR application of Emma McKinley Nease-- she likely copied the letter directly to the DAR app. but she left off the last sentence of this paragraph which reads as follows] "It is not stated (whether ?) he was (ever?) married."
2. [fourth paragraph] "The above ( illegible word) is the only soldier named John Lane of Pennsylvania and Maryland (illegible) the Revolutionary War records of this (department ?)."  - - My eye is drawn to the "only" part of the statement "the only soldier named John Lane of Pa. and Md.", and I wonder if Mrs. Nease seized upon this a bit too hastily?

It seems that Mrs. Nease then contacted a researcher in either 1925 or 1926 in Frederick Co., Md. to search for the correct Revolutionary Soldier, based on an enclosed letter (written by someone doing research in Frederick
Co., MD.)  It appears Mrs. Nease had hired or obtained help from a genealogist or a volunteer researcher. At the Frederick Co., Historical Society in MD, I found a ledger book with the name Mary K. Markell stamped on the front cover.

This record book (copy enclosed) lists Mrs. W. G. Nease at the top of page 20 and is a listing of research being collected on all LANE records in that county. This indicates that Mrs. Nease did not have complete knowledge of her ancestry through personal sources. She states on her application that she submitted a family Bible record (which I cannot locate from any source so far), but any Bible record she had must have had omissions for her to seek the help of an outside researcher. You will notice that "x's" appear beside some of the entries in Markell's ledger, giving the possible interpretation that the researcher and Mrs. Nease were going through a "process of elimination" to arrive at the correct Soldier's identity.

I ALSO OBTAINED A COPY OF THE RESEARCHER'S "NOTES" THAT SHE KEPT IN A BOOK AT THE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF FREDERICK CO., MD.

"Mary K. Markell Genealogical Collection"

This is a hard bound "blank pages" book one can write in as needed, marked on the front with the number  "7 " and below that "RECORD," and stamped or embossed with the words "Mary K. Markell Genealogical Collection".  The book begins on a page marked " 20 " in top left corner.

Each page is stamped with a number, namely, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24. Mrs. Markell's habit seems to have been to leave a blank page before and after each family name she researched; therefore page 19 and page 25 are left blank. The page marked "24" also has handwritten across the top "Mrs. W. G. Nease" -- apparently a note by the researcher to mark the beginning of her research work for Mrs. (William G) Emma McKinley Nease.
These notes are written in long-hand and it is a bit difficult to transcribe the handwriting.  The point I want to make about these notes is that Mrs. Emma McKinley Nease was being provided with all the available records of ALL the John Lanes in Frederick Co., Md.   In several places are marked "XXX" as though the researcher was possibly highlighting one particular John Lane as being "more likely" than others -- or was marking them as being "not likely" - - of course, this is only MY conjecture since Mrs. Markell left no explanation.

My conjecture further is that the researcher and Mrs. Emma McKinley Nease simply chose the wrong men to attach to my family history.

Interestingly, the second entry (on the first page, marked as page "20" ) is the marriage record of the correct John, marrying Catherine Baker, Jan 23, 1805.

Interestingly, the very last entry (on the page marked "24") is the correct John Lane Sr. (married to Catherine Baker). The entry reads (heading) "Court Rec. - John Lane, age 15 in Jan 1st, 1794, Apprentice to Martin Garver [my note - a.k.a. Garber] Jan 1, 1794 Rec. Orphans Court - Minutes Register of Wills Office 1794 Book". This was also found by a researcher I hired... the entry also reads "  ______  "

The GARBER family is directly related to our Lane family in Washington Co., Pa.  The Martin Garver in Orphans Court Minutes also lived very near in Frederick C., Md, within five (5) miles of Joseph and Mary (Sowers? Haines?) Baker, parents of Catherine Baker who married our John Lane Sr. [The Garber family is later married into my Lane family; no proof yet for any earlier marriages between the families.]    Joseph and Mary Baker lived at Pipe Creek.  Martin Garver's home at Beaver Dam was used as a meeting house for the German Baptist Brethren in the area, before they built the Beaver Dam church building.  Our John Lane, Sr., therefore, was surrounded by the Brethren there (and further connects the 14 year old John Lane as being our John Lane Sr. in Washington Co., PA who was a member of Ten Mile Church of the Brethren, Marianna, PA.)

The Frederick Co. Md. Historical Society refers to this book as the "Mary K. Markell's Ledger Book". The book measures 7 and 1/2 inches wide by 12 inches long, is pre-lined, and has a hardbound cover.

THIS NEXT LETTER IS A RESPONSE TO MRS. NEASE FROM MRS. MARKELL A
GENEALOGY RESEARCHER IN FREDERICK CO., MD

A letter (enclosed) dated Dec. 16, 1926 from Mary K. Markell (Mrs. Francis H. Markell) to Mrs. Nease shows the same handwriting as found in the Markell ledger. This letter shows that research was being done to locate the "right" John Lane/ his parents.

The Historical Society of Frederick County, Inc. was not able to find Mrs. Nease's letter(s) to Mrs.
Markell (per letter from Hx Society Feb. 1992.) But, they provided a copy of a letter Mrs. Nease received from her researcher in Frederick Co., MD.

My dear Mrs. Nease
I am sending you the marriage record you want - also a few others, just to show you how many John Lane's there were in Frederick. I will go over the land records to see what I can find there and the wills also. I am leaving
in Jan. for my vacation, on (?) my return I will see what I can give you in the Lane family history. And will also find out to what family Catherine Baker belongs. You might have Rev. eligibility (sic) there. With kind
regards. I am yours cordially .
(signed long hand) Mary K. Markell
Mrs. Francis H.
Dec. 16, 1926
NOTE: Per the Frederick Co., Md Genealogical Society, Mrs. Francis H. was one in the same as Mary K. Markell, and that the way the letter is signed with both of her names was common in the early 1900's.
Interestingly, on Feb. 18, 1992, I received the same Markell to Nease letter from the genealogy files held at the Citizen's Library, Washington Co., Pa. Attached to the letter, in Mary Markell's handwriting, is her research. Mostly it repeats what I have transcribed of the Markell Ledger book, but I present it here for comparison to Mary Markeil's Ledger Book.

This appears to be Mrs. Markell's "report" back to Mrs. Nease on the research, on unlined paper :

Mrs. Eli A Helmick
Registrar General

Dear Mrs. Helmick: -
(first paragraph) This is to certify that the dates in my application to D.A. R., were taken from family records. Some were copied from John Lane bible, in possession of Mary Lane Flowers at that time. Others were taken
from family bible of Mary Lane.
(second paragraph) I also have reason to believe I erred in copying my papers as to the date of death of John Lane which should have been 1843 and not 1863.

[NOTE:  !** 1843 was date of Rev. War Soldier's Death; 1863 I believe [?] was death date for John Lane Jr. son of Rev. Soldier!]
(third paragraph) I believe this to be a correct record, to the best of my
knowledge.
Sincerely yours,
(signed and typed)
Mrs. Emma McK. Nease  [Note: McKinley Nease]

Documents supporting my research - coming by 2006

ATTENTION INTERNET READERS

Over the years, I have been contacted by many people who were trying to research based on Emma McKinley Nease's information.  ALL of us have concluded the DAR Application is wrong.

Because of limited funds, I was never able to share all the documents concerning my research on this problem.   Between 1984 and 1990, I collected documents (for all 8 John Lane men) from: Frederick Co., MD, Washington Co., PA, Bedford Co., PA, Carroll Co., OH, and Ripley Co., IN.  Overall, I think I've done a superb job of putting together copies of original records that support my case, but, as in all large projects, something may have been overlooked.  I am hopeful that others may have found additional records that can further support my claims.

I hope within the next 3 to 6 months to scan ALL the documents I have concerning this research.

YOU can help document the facts about the men I have listed.  I welcome ALL additional documents you might have from your research on this DAR Application --  Please send me an email if you would like to add your documents.

Also, please leave your comments about this research by clicking on the link below.  (If your comments are on topics or research other than this DAR Application, please use the Guestbook.

The background was chosen specifically to emphasize the matriarchal role of women in "the life" of children and families, and the resilience of all the women of southwestern Pennsylvania.
