Welcome!  These six (6) web pages detail my research concerning the DAR Application of Mrs. Emma McKinley Nease on the record the Rev. War Soldier, John Lane Sr., of Bedford Co., PA. Copies of original documents will be included when possible.  This DAR application has led many researchers astray on the genealogy or family history for  collateral surnames and LANE, including research in Washington Co., PA, Bedford Co., PA, Frederick Co., MD, Carroll Co., OH, and Ripley Co., IN.  ANY proof which supports OR contradicts my research  is gratefully appreciated.  An additional page will address what you can do if you find a DAR Application is inaccurate.

SECTION FIVE

SECTION 5 CENSUS RECORDS and OTHER INFORMATION ON THE CHILDREN OF THE
REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER

I am enclosing evidence taken from the Tax Lists of Bedford County, as well as the 1850 Census of Bedford County for son John Lane, that proves the son continued to live in Bedford Co., PA. after the death of his Rev. War father, as well as that he was still living after the death of my known ancestor in 1844.

BEDFORD COUNTY PA JOHN LANE JR
1850 Census for the John Lane and Sarah (Davis) Lane.
Bedford Co., PA Hopewell Twp. 1850 - * This was hand copied because there is no reader-printer available at the Bedford Co. Historical Society Library.
Hand-copied May 14, 1992.
John Lane 45 years old. farmer PA b. 1805
Sarah 40 " b. 1810
Lucinda 24
Rebecca 20
Oliver 18
Caroline 16 "
Thomas 15 "
Elizabeth 14 "
Drucilla 13 "
David 10
Juliann 9 "
Margaret 4 "
William H. 3
David Lane 40 farmer " ---- listed in household of John, his brother.
David, b. 1810
This Census data would indicate THIS John Lane (Jr.), son of the Rev. War Soldier, WAS IN THE SAME *GENERATION* AS THE CHILDREN of my John Lane "Sr." of Washington Co., PA, namely:
John Lane, Jr. b 1804 (his Bible), Joseph Lane b. 1807 (his Bible), Daniel Lane b. 1810 (Bible/Obit.), Mary A. Lane Flowers b. 71812-1820?

Please note that the John Lane Jr., son of my .John Lane Sr. of Washington Co., PA, moves from Washington Co, PA about 1837 (disappears from W. Bethlehem Twp., Washington Co., Pa. Tax List between 1835-1837) to Ripley Co., Holton, Indiana.

His 1850 Census data (Ripley Co., Holton, Indiana Census - done Sept. 1850) is as follows (hand copied in May 1985):
1850 CENSUS RIPLEY CO, INDIANA JOHN LANE JR. -  S/0 JOHN LANE SR OF WASHINGTON CO., PA.
Shelby Twp. Ripley Co., Indiana
John Lane 45 years b. Maryland
Susannah 42 b. Virginia
Sarah Jane 19 b. Pennsylvania
William 17 b.
Katherine 15 b. "
Martha 12 b. Indiana
Mary Ellen 9 b. In.
John A. 4 b. In.
Joseph D. 1 b. In.

Please note, the wife of this John Lane, Jr., listed above, was Susannah McCLURE Lane, per records of the living descendants from John Lane, Jr.'s family which are in their possession, and other research done by Linda Stanley and this writer.

Conversely, the wife of the Bedford Co., PA John Lane Jr. was a Sarah Davis Lane.   Please note that the Deed of John Lane Jr. married to Sarah Davis, and the 1850 Census for him, as well as other deeds which appear in Bedford Co., PA at later dates, all indicate that the son John Lane Jr. was married to a Sarah (maiden name Davis).

This disproves the DAR information as given under the "Children" section which presently states that this Revolutionary Soldier's son John Jr. was married to Catherine Baker.  (Our John Sr. was married to Catherine Baker.)

I realize this is probably as clear as mud, but the point is that the Rev. Soldier did have a son named John, but that he was not married to Catherine Baker, who was actually the wife of my ancestor in Washington, PA. Mrs. Nease apparently confused the 2 families, simply based on the fact of such a common first name "John"  - and that both John Srs. had their own John Jrs.

JOHN LANE JR and SR of BEDFORD CO., PA:
I could not find the Obituary for John Lane, Jr. in Bedford Co., Pa.  However, an Orphan's Court document dated ______ from Bedford Co. PA Courthouse indicates he died before February 1858. Also, a descendant of this line through Lucinda, first child of John Jr. and Sarah Davis Lane, indicates that this John Jr. was born 1805 in Bedford Co., PA and states he died 1857/1858 (see notes of Howard R. Ferguson, descendant of Lucinda Lane __ , address 375 Sunrise Drive, Amherst, Ohio 440001-1546.)

I could not find the Obituary for Rev. War Soldier John Lane Sr. in Bedford Co., Pa. There are no copies of newspapers that early in the files at Pioneer Historical Library, Bedford, PA.

OTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE CHILDREN OF THE REV. SOLDIER

Dealing first with the son John Lane, Jr., of Bedford Co., Pa:
(A.) It is TRUE that the son, John Lane <s/o the Rev. Soldier John Lane "Sr." of Bedford Co., Pa.> was married to Sarah Davis.
PROOF #1: Book called "True Stories of Broad Top Mountain and the Surrounding Valleys" by David Foster Horton.  Horton states that Rev. Soldier John Lane's children married the following people:

1. John Lane m. a daughter of "Isah Davis, Esq." and she was a sister of Alexander Davis - (NOTE- I have lots of information on John Lane, Jr. and Sarah Davis Lane and their 12 children.)

2. David Lane m. Carolina Ford (NOTE- I have a Xeroxed picture of these two, plus lots of info on their descendants.)

3. Deborah Lane

4. Elizabeth Lane m. William Howard

5. Julianna Lane [not in Horton's book but she was possibly married to a Richard Wood of Philadelphia, Pa.]

6. Hannah Lane m. Andrew McLary

7. Sarah Lane m. Jacob Moyer (s/o Martin Moyer a.k.a. Moyars a.k.a. Myers)

8. Maony Lane

9. Mary Lane [marriage not in Horton's book, but on 27 May 1839 a Mary Lane gave her power of attorney to a James Lane; this also said she was now in Philadelphia - Deed Book "T" pg. 180, yr. 1839]

(B.) It is TRUE that MY John Lane (he is also a Sr.) married a Catherine Baker in Frederick Co., Md. 23 Jan 1805. This fact is easily verifiable by Marriage Records at Frederick Co., Md. Courthouse. "1778-1865 Marriage Records", pg. 227 - book located in Recorder of Deeds office.

Horton's book also says one daughter married William Young, but it doesn't specify which daughter.
From "True Stories of Broadtop Mountain & the Surrounding Valleys" by David Foster Horton

(p. 32-33) (a William Lane built something for Hopewell Furnace in 1802)
(James Lane was the son of William Lane)
p. 34 William Lane founded Hopewell and died in Martinsburg about 1842
- had son named James m. Dr. David Wishart's daughter
James lived in Hopewell then moved to 111. and died there ca. 1853
Pinkey Buck m. John Lane's daughter (of Bett's Valley) (known as Little Ground Hog Valley)
Pinkey Buck & Lane female had son Richard Buck who died in California

17 Sept. 1879 - when book was written???

pg. 48 full paragraph #1, last sentence

p.42 Jacob Mayer son of Martin Mayer married Sarah Lane
Andrew McLarry m. Hannah Lane
William Howard m. Elizabeth Lane
John Lane "Jr." m. daughter of Isah Davis who was sister of Alexander Davis
David Lane m. Carolina Ford
(Also of note: on child # 7, Sarah Lane, born April 12, 1795 in Bedford Co., Pa., married June 18, 1815 to Jacob Moyars aka Myers born March 9, 1790 - per DAR application of Anna Lenore Myers, National Number 547234, and History of Cherokee Co., Kansas, by Allision, 1904, pg. 220 and 340. Anna's father, (John Lane Myers) "and his parents and family came to Kansas from Pennsylvania in 1878" per "References for Lineage" on the DAR Application of Anna Lenore Myers.)
Secondary NOTE of interest in this: In "True Stories of Broadtop Mountain & the Surrounding Valleys" by David Foster Horton there is NO mention of BAKER family being related to this John LANE family, to the Rev. Soldier of Bedford Co., Pa. nor any BAKERs related to his children.

PROOF #2:  Deed Book "Y" p. 475 yr. 1850 dated 30 April 1849 - John Lane and Sarah, his wife, to Thomas PRICE - Witnesses were James Price and A. Davis -- [Thomas Price probably related to Catherine Price Lane, wife of the Rev. Soldier John Lane Sr. of Broad Top Twp, Bedford Co., Pa.] This deed says this was land willed to John (Jr.) by his father, John Lane <Rev Soldier>, dated 3 Dec. 1829 probated Mar 15, 1843. Will Book #3, p. 246 Note that Horton's book states that Sarah Davis Lane was a sister to Alexander Davis, and "A. Davis" is one of the witnesses on this deed.

The background was chosen specifically to emphasize the matriarchal role of women in "the life" of children and families, and the resilience of all the women of southwestern Pennsylvania.
