"Farm office to remain in Chartiers
The U.S. Farm Service Agency, a division of the Department of Agriculture, has decided to maintain its Meadow Lands office.

In May 2005, FSA announced it would consolidate offices and create a single office in Washington County to serve farmers in Washington, Greene and Fayette counties. The move would have created an inconvenience to farmers in the region, according to U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy.

"Keeping the Washington County office at its current location ensures the needs of local farmers will continue to be met, and recognizes the vital contributions the industry makes to the region," Murphy said.

With more than 250,000 acres committed to farming, Washington County is the third-largest agriculture county in Pennsylvania. It ranks first in the number of cattle farms and is second in sheep farming.

The FSA office in Washington County is located at 2800 N. Main St. Extension, Meadow Lands, and can be reached at 724-222-3060 ext. 2."

"History of FSA - The Farm Service Agency traces its beginnings to 1933, in the depths of the Great Depression. A wave of discontent caused by mounting unemployment and farm failures had helped elect President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who promised Americans a "New Deal".

One result was the establishment in 1935 of a Department of Agriculture agency with familiar initials: FSA, which stood for Farm Security Administration. Originally called the Resettlement Administration, and renamed in 1937, its original mission was to relocate entire farm communities to areas in which it was hoped farming could be carried out more profitably. But resettlement was controversial and expensive, and its results ambiguous. Other roles soon became more important, including the Standard Rural Rehabilitation Loan Program, which provided credit, farm and home management planning, and technical supervision, and which was the forerunner of the farm loan programs of the Farmers Home Administration....

Today FSA's responsibilities are organized into 5 areas: Farm Credit, Farm Programs, Commodity Operations, Management, and State Operations."  The History of FSA is quoted from the FSA website at: http://www.fsa.usda.gov/pas/aboutus.htm

It is hard to believe that Washington County was once mostly open farm lands, each tract consisting of typically hundreds of acres.  Other smaller farms were interspersed among larger family farms.  And even those living inside the "city limits" of Washington kept livestock close to their residence and maintained a garden, both important to feeding individual families.

Here is a site to memorialize your ancestor-farmers, to boast of their land-holdings, and tell everyone where your ancestor worked their farm.  You can add your email address, if you'd like others to be able to contact you.

The background was chosen specifically to emphasize the matriarchal role of women in "the life" of children and families, and the resilience of all the women of southwestern Pennsylvania.
