2007 Wonsettler/Whonsetler/Haas Reunion

THEME:  Getting Reaquainted

SURNAMES: A group of descendents of Reuben Whonsetler of Wayne Co., OH are planning a reunion of the Whonsetler, Wonsettler, Haas, and all intermarried families.  The families of Philip, Daniel, Jacob, David, Samuel Whonsetler, and others in the Whonsetler lineage.
AREA COVERED: Washington County PA, to Wayne Co., OH.
WHERE / WHEN:

The county seat of Wooster is about 150 miles or 2 1/2 hours from Washington, PA. It has been over 50 years since a family reunion has taken place and we would encourage all the families of Philip, Daniel, Jacob, David, Samuel, and others in the Whonsetler lineage to come and get reacquainted with their "cousins" here in Ohio. We will be sharing family history information, photos, memorabilia; and good times, stories, and friendship - to say nothing of all the good food the Whonsetler reunions were known for.

We are making this a covered dish picnic-style event. There is no fee but we are asking for donations to help the organizers offset the rental, mailing, and materials costs.

Please spread the word among the families in the Washington area. For anyone interested in more detailed information including specifics as to time, maps and directions, hotel lists, etc., please contact one of the two people listed below.

COMMENTS / MESSAGE:   The Philips Family that was prominent in the area around Library, Finleyville, McMurray, etc in Allegheny/Washington Counties of PA originated in this country with the arrival in 1755 of Joseph and Mary Philips from Wales.

Jospeh and Mary had four sons: David, John, Josiah, and Joseph Jr. This son Josiah (we say he is "of the second generation", that is, his parents represented the first generation in America) had 9 children, among them were the sons David and John.

The "David Philips in Tennessee" is this David, the son of Josiah, who was in turn the son of Joseph and Mary Philips. The "Uncle David" is the eldest son of Joseph and Mary; he is universally referred to within the Family as "Rev. David". He was the pastor at Peteres Creek Baptist Church in the late 1700s.

In addition to these two sons of Josiah (David and John) migrating to Tennessee, there were two others - sons of Rev. David Philips, to wit, John and Benjamin. These four men were the progenitors of the Philips Family in Tennessee. Through usage, many of them now spell their name with two "L's": Phillips. - Mark Friden

REUNION REPORT:   Someone in the group asked me if I attended the Philips Family Reunion this year, which I did. A brief report:

This year marked the 136th consecutive annual reunion! For this year's edition (on June 22-24), the Reunion was moved to Tennessee from Chester County, PA, where it has historically been held. The actual location was Lebanon, TN, which was very close to Watertown, and is about 30 miles East of Nashville. Two of the sons of Rev. David Philips (who was the pastor at Peters Creek Baptist Church in the late 1700s) left the area of Library, PA and travelled down the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers to the Cumberland River; they then travelled up the Cumberland and settled near Watertown in 1797. Family graves from this era can still be seen - many cousins went to visit them during the weekend. There are quite a number of descendants still in that area (many of whom, through usage, spell their name "Phillips"), which is why it was selected as a site for the Reunion.

As is usual with this Reunion, it began on Friday evening with a get-together dinner at the host hotel, the very nice Comfort Suites in Lebanon. Saturday was the actual Reunion, held in the fellowship hall of a local church. The President of Cumberland University was on hand to give the welcome address. The keynote speaker was from the Wilson County Archives. There was some musical entertainment, some singing, and the usual luncheon. A group photo was taken in the Sanctuary, and, through the wonders of modern photography, framed 8" x 10" prints were available within a half an hour, even with the legend "Lebanon, TN - 136th Philips Family Reunion - June 23, 2007" printed right on the photo. The 1935 book Phillips Family History by Judge Harry Phillips, which has been out of print for many, many years, was reprinted in a hard cover edition and sold at the Reunion. It deals primarily with the descendants of the two sons mentioned above who had settled near what is now Watertown a little over 200 years ago.

Sunday we had lunch at a county park where there was a collection of old, historic structures (log cabins, etc - dating from when the region was first settled) and that was followed by live blue grass music entertainment in an outdoor setting. A good time was had by all. Over all, the attendance was about 100. Some were there all weekend, some could only attend on Friday night, others arrived too late for the Friday dinner.

There is discussion of having "mini reunions" in 2008 in Montana and Salt Lake City, among the sites mentioned. A possible site for 2009 is Missouri, and in 2010, the present plan has the Reunion coming back to western PA (probably at Peters Creek Baptist Church).

Mark Friden

The background was chosen specifically to emphasize the matriarchal role of women in "the life" of children and families, and the resilience of all the women of southwestern Pennsylvania.
