| THREE DISTRICT SCHOOLS LEAVE FOR CAMPSITES Charleroi High was the only Big Five Conference member still waging pre-season football drills at home today as three district schools--Monessen, Donora and Brownsville-- departed for camp sites. College,
while Jimmy RUSSELL led his dragons to Camp Bluehole, the Donora Lions Camp site,
in Somerset County. Brownsville, under Andy SEPSI, embarked for the Fayette County mountains and Camp Kiwanis,
the Brownies' perennial proving grounds near The Summit. CHS Last To Leave The Cougars will be the last Big Five school to depart for training camp, with Monngahela the forst. The Wildcats are at Camp Buffalo, Washington YMCA site near Amity** [Note: Near Taylorstown, PA], where they've been working out since Sunday. They return home Saturday. Meantime, the Cougars continued to sharpen their claws for the coming season at their make-shift 'camp' set up at The Stadium prior to their departure Sunday evening at 6:30 o'clock for Somerset. They will return Saturday, Sept. 4. The Charleroi Cougar Rooster Club is making arrangements to transport a 36-player squad to the beautiful surroundings of Somerset, the squad will be quartered at the National Guard State Armory, with drills to be staged on grounds adjoining Somerset High school [sic], the same site used by the Cougars in 1947. Switch to "T" Head Coach James (Rab) CURRIE and his hard-working aide, Mike BOOTH, sent their charges through two more rugged workouts in a sweltering heat yesterday at The Stadium. The Cougars experimented with the "T" formation after using the single-wing during the early stages of practice, capping the drill with a light scrimmage. The Cougar's backfield strength increased when George ZURAW, reserve quarterback last season, reported for practice for the first time. |
