Bellmar Switches Grid
Site to Camp Buffalo
| 'Canes to Share New Spot With Jeannette High Due to unforeseen developments, Bellmar High has been forced to switch its pre-season football training camp, it was learned today. The Hurricaines were all set to go to Great Lakes Camp for Boys, an exclusive spot near Erie, the week of Aug. 21-27, but will do their conditioning at Camp Buffalo, near Washington, Pa., instead.

Cost Too High A spokesman for the Bellmar-ette [sic= Bellmar-Jeanette??] Joint School Board said the Erie site was "not feasible" because of added expenses which would exceed the $1200 alloted [sic] for the training camp. "It would have cost us almost $700 before the first meal was served," he explained. "At that rate, $1200 would hardly be enough to provide all the necessities for a party of 40 for one week." "It seems there were some 'hidden' expenditures that we didn't know about when he first considered going to the Great Lakes Camp for Boys." Buffalo Ideal Site At Camp Buffalo, an established reservation used by Boy Scouts** in Washington-Greene Counties during summer months, the 'Canes will find another attractive and well-equipped site, located just off Route 31 about 10 miles west of Washington. [Note: Supposedly, the YMCA Camp Buffalo was never a Boy Scout campsite.] It has modern facilities, including a spacious dining hall, and the players will be billeted in rustic log cabin-style buildings. A large dormitory where the boys will gather in the evenings is also located on the grounds, as well as a huge training area which can be used by several squads at one time. Camp Buffalo also has a lake which can be used for both swimming and fishing. A number of Western Pennsylvania high schools have used Camp Buffalo for a pre-season training spot, including Jeanette which will share the facilities with Bellmar this year. |
