The late king was a very well respected archeoligist. He often went to Greece
and specificaly Italy, where he sometimes took initiative and organised new archelogical
projects. He also took initiative to the swedish cultural institutes in Rome
and Athens. He also had a huge and valuable collection of antique chinese art
and ancient greek coins aswell as modern swedish graphic. Most of his collections
were left to swedsih museums after his death in 1973.
