THE FARIS CAVES
The Faris Caves are on land that was purchased by the Faris Brothers (Henry Van Dieman, Arthur Irwin and Amzi McClaine & Winfield Scott (Wint) in 1883. There are three rooms cut out of a sandstone cliff. One was a school room, one was a blacksmith shop and bunkhouse and the third, which had a spring running out of it, was the cold room and the source of water for Wint and Jessie's house and surrounding area. A picture exists (Bob Rasmussen, Washington State) of Norma (Nona or Nonie) Faris teaching a class that included Wint and Jessie (Hudson) Faris' son Robert. Bob Rasmussen's grandmother (sister to Gertrude Becker Faris) told him stories when he was small about hiding from the Indians in the caves. He has some old pictures of the caves and more recent ones. The land is now owned by Robert Hudson, a relative of Wint;'s wife Jessie. Wint served as guardian for Frank B. Faris and his brother Edward when their parents died.
