2. John2 Brassey (1)(2) birth date unknown. John died circa 1737.

He married Mary.

He made a will 5 August 1731. It was proved by his son and executor, Nathaniel Brassey, 2 June 1737, Prerogative Court of Canterbury (Wake). It may be assumed, based on the arms carved on the tombstones of his son, that John Brassey was descended from the Brasseys of Bulkeley in Cheshire.

John Brassey acquired the Manor of Roxford in Hertford by conveyance from the widow and daughter of George Chalncomb in March 1699. The manor was willed by John in 1731 to his son, Nathaniel, who in turn willed it in 1763 to his son, Nathaniel.

John Brassey and Mary had the following children:

6. 3 Brassey (John2, 1) (living status unknown).

Brassey and Sir George Caswall had the following children:

child 10 i. George4 Caswall. George died July 1746. He was of Weybridge, Surrey, at the time of his death. He married Mary.

He made a will. It was proved by his widow, Mary on 21 July 1746 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (Edmunds 202). He was appointed in 1740 the Principal Inspector of the Out-Port Collectors' Accounts of the Customs.

7. Elizabeth3 Brassey (John2, 1) (living status unknown).

Elizabeth Brassey and John Iles had the following children:

child 12 i. Ann4 Iles. Ann died 9 March 1779. Her body was interred Friends' Ground in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England. She married Thomas Dimsdale 17 June 1746. Thomas was born 29 May 1712 in Theydon Gernon, Essex, England.(3) Thomas(4) was the son of John Dimsdale and Susanna Bowyer. His body was interred Friend's Ground in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England.(5) He was a grandson of Robert Dimsdale, who accompanied William Penn to America in 1684 and then returned to England. He was instructed in medicine by his father, then studied at St. Thomas's Hospital. He began the practice of medicine at Hertford about 1734. After the death of his first wife, who left him childless, in 1744, he volunteered for the medical staff of the Duke of Cumberland during the suppression of the Scotch Rebellion until after the surrender of Carlisle to the King's forces.

Returning to Hertford, he remarried, retired for a short time, then obtained his M.D. degree in 1761. Because of his expertise in smallpox inoculation, her Imperial Majesty, Catherine, Empress of all the Russias invited him in 1768 to her court to inoculate her and her son, the Grand Duke. She rewarded his efforts by appointing him Counsellor or State and Physician to her Imperial Majesty with an annuity of 500 pounds sterling, and making him a Baron of the Russian Empire. She also paid him 10,000 pounds sterling, plus an additional 2,000 pounds for expenses of his journey to St. Petersburg. He was also given permission to add to their family arms a black wing of the spread eagle of the Imperial Russian arms in a gold shield placed in the center.

8. Sarah3 Brassey (John2, 1) was born 28 January 1688. Sarah died 22 October 1714. Her body was interred Allhallows Church, Lombard St. in London, England.

She married Thomas Boddington 27 November 1711 St. Aske's Hospital in Hoxton, London, England. Thomas was born 13 September 1678. Thomas was the son of George Boddington and Hannah Cope. Thomas died 20 December 1755 in Hertford, Hertfordshire, England. His body was interred at Bunhill Fields. He was admitted to the Freedom of the City of London on 13 September 1699 and to the Freedom the Levant Company on 10 October 1699. He was a merchant of London, and his father was a turkey merchant.

Sarah Brassey and Thomas Boddington had the following children:

child 17 ii. Mary Boddington was born 20 September 1712. Mary died 20 July 1741. Her body was interred Camberwell Church her great aunt Ford's vault. She married Richard Roberts 6 December 1737 in Hoxton, London, England.

child 18 iii. Sarah Boddington was born 12 October 1714. Sarah died 29 October 1714. Her body was interred All Hallows Church, Lombard St. in London, England.

9. Nathaniel3 Brassey (John2, 1)(6) was born circa 1697. Nathaniel died 29 September 1765.(7) His obituary notice (Nathaniel Brassey in Lombard St., 1765) was recorded in The Gentleman's Magazine. His body was interred Hertingfordbury Churchyard in Hertingfordbury, Hertfordshire, England.(8) He was buried in the Hertingfordbury Churchyard, the inscription on his tablet reading: "In memory of Nathaniel Brassey, Esq. of Roxford, in this County, who died the 29th of Sept. 1765, aged 68."

The arms on the inscription are blazoned: Quarterly, per fess indented ... and ... in the first quarter a bird, Brassey, impaling ... a chevron between three falcons ....

He married twice. He married . He married Mary. Mary was born circa 1719. Mary died 5 October 1786. Her body was interred Hertingfordbury Churchyard in Hertingfordbury, Hertfordshire, England.(9) The inscription on her tablet indicates the name of Mrs. Martha Brassey, relict of Nathaniel Brassey, died 5 Oct. 1786, aged 67.

He made a will 6 January 1763.(10) He was a banker of Lombard Street, London, and was of Roxford in Hertingfordbury. He was a Member of Parliament for the Borough of Hertford in four successive Parliaments.

Nathaniel Brassey had the following child:

child 19 i. Mary4 Brassey. Mary died 4 February 1744/5. Her body was interred Friends' Ground in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England. He married Elizabeth. Elizabeth was born 1729. Elizabeth died 24 July 1762. Her body was interred All Saints in Hertford, Hertfordshire, England.

Richard Iles and Elizabeth had the following child:

child 23 i. Anne5 Iles was born 1743. Anne died 18 March 1781. Her body was interred All Saints in Hertford, Hertfordshire, England. She married Richard Byron.

15. John4 Iles (Elizabeth3 Brassey, John2, 1) was born 1717. John died 21 June 1759. His body was interred All Saints in Hertford, Hertfordshire, England.

He married Hannah Boddington 10 September 1741 Aske's Hospital in Hoxton, London, England. Hannah was the daughter of Thomas Boddington and Sarah Brassey. Hannah died 29 March 1749.

He made a will 6 August 1756. It was proved by both executors, Thos. Dimsdale & Joseph Dimsdale, on 28 June 1759 (PCC). He lived in Hertford, and owned property at Tuddington and Luton in Bedfordshire.

John Iles and Hannah Boddington had the following children:

16. Hannah4 Boddington (Sarah3 Brassey, John2, 1) birth date unknown. Hannah died 29 March 1749.

She married John Iles 10 September 1741 Aske's Hospital in Hoxton, London, England. John was born 1717. John was the son of John Iles and Elizabeth Brassey. John died 21 June 1759. His body was interred All Saints in Hertford, Hertfordshire, England. He made a will 6 August 1756. It was proved by both executors, Thos. Dimsdale & Joseph Dimsdale, on 28 June 1759 (PCC). 20. Nathaniel4 Brassey (Nathaniel3, John2, 1) was born June 1752. Nathaniel died 18 September 1798.(15) His body was interred Hertingfordbury Churchyard in Hertingfordbury, Hertfordshire, England.(16) The inscription reads: " In memory of Nathaniel Brassey, Esq. who died the 18th of Sept. 1798, aged 46. The arms on the inscription are blazoned: Brassey, impaling ... two bars ... over all a bend counter compony ... and ....

He married Mary Lee 12 January 1776. Mary was born 1757. Mary was the daughter of Atton Lee. Mary died 26 November 1814 Lower Seymour Street in London, England.(17) Her body was interred Hertingfordbury Churchyard in Hertingfordbury, Hertfordshire, England.(18) The inscription on her tablet gives her age as 57. Her father was a banker of Lombard Street. He was a banker of Lombard Street, London, and of Roxford in Hertingfordbury.

Nathaniel Brassey and Mary Lee had the following children:

child 30 ii. Maria Brassey (living status unknown).

child 31 iii. Nathaniel Brassey was born 1777. Nathaniel died 14 September 1782.(19) His body was interred Hertingfordbury Churchyard in Hertingfordbury, Hertfordshire, England.(20) The inscription on his tablet in the Hertingfordbury churchyard gives his age as five years.

He was christened 26 March 1777 All Hallow's London Wall in London, England.(21)

child 32 iv. Richard John Brassey(22) was born 1780. Richard died 24 June 1844. He married Anne Ibbetson June or July 1802. Anne is the daughter of Samuel Ibbetson. She was of Barking, Essex.

He was christened 7 November 1780 All Hallow's London Wall in London, England.(23) He was a banker of Lombard Street. He came into possession of Roxford from his father in 1763 and sold the manor to William Baker of Beyford-Bury in 1802.

child 33 v. Nathaniel Brassey was born 1789. Nathaniel died December 1805. He was a Midshipman on board His Majesty's Ship "L'Heureux" in the West Indies.
