Welcome to the home page of the Dykes Family
Tree.
This site is a front page for research currently being conducted into the
Dykes Family Tree. The tree itself is hosted with WorldConnect.
Research into the Dykes Family Tree began with Josephine
Hilary Dykes in the year 2000, with her asking preliminary questions of
different family members. After her passing, research would come to a
standstill until Daniel
Dykes continued the research in 2003. To date, the research has been
quite successful with the uncovering of previously unknown family history
which also resulted in contact being made between family 'strains' who had
not communicated since approximately the 1940's.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you
have any enquiries or information pertaining to the Dykes Family Tree or any
related families.
- (05/11/03) The two birth certificates arrived today, and
unfortunately the Mary
Bisby certificate appears to be the wrong Mary Bisby. Fortunately,
I ordered the correct certificate for Samuel
Dykes. It's confirmed that is parents are Joel
Dykes and Mary
Campbell. It has also revealed that Joel worked at the Herculaneum
Pottery factory in Liverpool as a furnace man, and this is where Samuel
was born. Oddly enough, the certificate notes Samuel's birth time. All
the details have been included into the entries for Samuel, Joel and
Mary Campbell.
- (16/10/03) I've ordered the two birth certificates that I
mentioned in my previous update, so let's give it a few weeks. Incidentally,
I've found that the Church that Samuel
Dykes and Mary
Bisby married at would have been Holy Trinity, in Wicker, Sheffield.
Thought built in the 1800's, the Church is still standing to this day
and a picture is available here.
- (13/10/03) The recent arrival of Samuel
Dykes' and Mary
Bisby's marriage certificate sent me in search of both their birth
certificates. While I haven't sent off for either, I did find the GRO
references for both. If correct, Samuel was born in West Derby in the
December Quarter of 1838 and Mary was born in the March Quarter of 1840
in Rotherham. I'll be sending off for both certificates shortly.
- (11/10/03) Two things that I couldn't distinguish right now
appear clearer. One was the location, both Samuel and Mary appear to
have lived in 'Spital Lower' before their marriage, though no exact
address is given. In regards to the witnesses, which I couldn't also
read, I have discerned that it reads 'the mark x of Samuel Brookes' and
'the mark x of Elizabeth Brookes'; perhaps 'the mark' indicates they
were both illiterate?
- (10/10/03) I've received the marriage certificate for Samuel
Dykes and Mary
Bisby. They were married on Feb 2, 1863 in the Parish Church in
Wicker, Sheffield, York. I'm having trouble distinguishing a few of the
things on the certificate though so more research is needed. The
certificate does confirm Joel
Dykes as Samuel's father and reveals that Mary's father was named
Joseph.
