2. William² FLETCHER (John¹) (#340) was born from Darlington, Yorkshire 1838.

He married Mary Jane MEIR. (Mary Jane MEIR is #341.) Mary became the mother of Arthur James FLETCHER in Sunderland, 1868c.

He was christened in Whitby, Yorkshire, Wednesday 28th July 1841. At 30 years of age William became the father of Arthur James FLETCHER in Sunderland, 1868c. He was listed as head of household in the 1881 census in Stranton, North Yorkshire.

Historical events during the life of William FLETCHER: The strategic port of Aden is annexed to British India on January 16, 1839; Robert Peel succeeds Lord Melbourne as Prime Minister for the second time on August 28, 1841; William Gladstone, the liberal leader, forms a ministry after their election victory on December 9, 1868; Britain recognizes Transvaal's self-government at Pretoria convention on August 3, 1881.

William FLETCHER and Mary Jane MEIR had the following children:

3 i. William³ FLETCHER (#342).

4 ii. Charles FLETCHER (#343).

+ 5 iii. Arthur James FLETCHER was born 1868c.
