HISTORY OF SACKVILLE NEW BRUNSWICKBy DR. WILLIAM COCHRAN MILNER Historian, and Former Dominion Archivist(1846-1939)Originally published in 1934 by The Tribune Press, Ltd., Printers & Publishers, Sackville, New Brunswick
…Immigration from the New England States at once set in; vessel after vessel came with people from Connecticut, Rhode Island, and other New England colonies. The lands were surveyed; allotments made to the settlers, but they were obviously disappointed, because when Mr. Charles Dixon arrived from Yorkshire, in 1772, all but three New England families had disappeared. Two years after, the first settler from New England, Israel Purdy, arrived with a contingent of settlers from Newberry Port, and settled at Maugerville. At this time, 1772, the Peabody, Symonds, White and Hazen immigration were building up their trading post at the mouth of the Saint John River. Four years after the settlement at Sackville, the German settlement at Hopewell from Pennsylvania was made and also the Commins settlement at Hillsboro…
… John, the eldest son of John and Sarah Johnson, was born in Ireland in the year 1741. He was deaf and dumb. He inherited his father's property in the Lower Village of Truro. He removed to California about the year 1850. He was married there to Armintha Hall. They have two sons and one daughter. William M., their second son, was born July 18th, 1831. He was married to Amelia, daughter of Joseph Wilson and Alice Barnhill, his wife, June 8th, 1858. They have sons and daughters. John Yuill Johnson, their third son, was born July 16th, 1834. He removed to California in the fall of the year 1865. Elizabeth, their fourth daughter, was born November 14th, 1837. She died march 22nd, 1854, aged 16 years.
