Hi Lance & Christie,

I have some info about Edmund PURDY m. Rebecca BURGEE, as below.

Rebecca BURGEE was born in 1779.  She married Edmund PURDY on December

18, 1792.  She would be a young age of 13 at the time of her marriage.

Of significance is the fact that the license was issued in Frederick

Co., MD., and there was only one BURGEE family and only one PURDIE (or

Purdy) family in the county at the time, so far as I can tell from

census records.

Edmund PURDY (or Purdie) was born about 1775 in Frederick Co., MD.

(Source:  Family Search Ancestral File," Rebecca Burgee, 1799, Computer

Disks 2.4, Aug. 1993, Family History Library (Latter Day Saints),

Marietta, GA).  The 1790 Census shows a William PURDIE, Jr. living with

his family in Frederick Co., MD. The family consisted of 1 male greater

than 16 years of age, 2 males less than 16, and 2 females (no age

listed).  There is no other family with the name PURDIE or PURDY listed

in the 1790 Census of Frederick Co., MD.  It is quite possible that

PURDIE and PURDY are one in the same and that this William PURDIE, SR.

is the father of Edmund PURDY. Appears to be proven below. The PURDIE

family and my BURGEE family lived quite close to each other and were

perhaps close friends and their off spring married as above.  An E.

PURDY family is mentioned in the 1810 U.S. Census as living in Frederick

Co, MD.  It is not known if this is our Edmund PURDY family as shown

above.

An Edmund PURDY family is listed in the 1820 U.S. Census as living in

Frederick Co., MD, Election District No. 1.  His family consisted of one

male, age 45 or older, one male, age 10-16, one male age 16-26, one

female age 10-16, and one female age 45 or older.  This appears to be

our Edmund PURDY, with a wife, one son and one daughter. Cannot

positively prove this, but appeared to be only one Edmund PURDY family

in the area at the time.  You may speculate or draw you own conclusions

on this one.  Indicates this Edmund PURDY and his wife were born before

1775.  Might be a little too early for my Rebecca BURGEE reported to

have been born in 1779, but is close since Census records often conflict

with other data. But, if she was born before 1775, then she would have

been at least 17 at marriage, and not 13 as shown above. The birth date

would be about right (1775) for Edmund PURDY.

Edmund and Rebecca (BURGEE) PURDY had only one child that my research

can prove, although the 1820 Census record indicates a possible son in

the family.  The daughter was:  Jemima PURDY, b. January 11, 1801, in

Frederick Co., MD.  Jemima later moved to Fairfield Township, Jackson,

Iowa, and she died there on November 26, 1893.  She was buried in Rathbun

Cemetery in Jackson, Iowa.

Edmund PURDY was listed as a son of William PURDY, Sr. in the Court

Records of Frederick Co., MD from 1794-1837.  About 1788, there was an

Act of Assembly passed entitled "Act to Direct Descents."  This act

ensured an equal distribution to the heirs of a person who died without

a will.  The widow was given one third of the property including at

least part of the home dwelling, and included the best part of the

property.  If the land could not be divided equally, it would then be

offered to each child (or brothers and sisters if no issue) by order of

birth.  If they chose to take the property, they would then have to pay

the others their equal share of the appraised value within a specified

time period.  Now, what does this mean to Edmund PURDY?

Apparently the wife predeceased William PURDY, who died in 1809, since

she was not listed in the descendant document.  There were 14 children

in the family.  The 12 surviving children and five grand-children were

granted an equal part of the real property estate, accordingly:

"Guardian: Charles Purdy.  Land-"Joseph's Advantage", part of "William

and Elizabeth," part of "The Zachariah (405 acres).  Edmund PURDY,

eldest son, take the estate;  each child's share was $183.75 on February

1812.  Commissioners:  Ely Hyatt, Elisha Beall, Thomas Cooke, Ely

Brashear, Otho Sprigg, dated 13 April 1812." (Source: Descents - Court

records from 1794-1837, Frederick Co., MD, located on Internet at:

http://members.aol.com/DorindaMD/descents.html, 7.5.98 4:14 PM, pp.

1-38.  This is of course related to the current FREDERICK CO LIST that

we all subscribe to.  Check it out.

The children of William PURDY Sr., listed in this document are:

1. Sarah, w/o Jeremiah NORWOOD.

2. Edmund PURDY (who we are talking about in this message)

3. William PURDY, JR.

4. Elizabeth, dec. w/o Osborn HILLEARY, and 6 children:

41. Sarah, w/o Thomas NORWOOD.

42. Ralph HILLEARY.

43. Deborah HILLEARY.

44-46. All minors, William, Thomas and Mary, all less than (age) 16.

5. Nancy PURDY.

6. Hannah PURDY.

7. Mary, dec. w/o Adam RAMSOWER, and daughter

71. Elizabeth RAMSOWER, minor, less than (age) 16.

8. Charles PURDY.

9. Deborah, w/o Jeremiah WATKINS.

10. Eleanora, w/o Joseph RICHARDS.

11. Catherine, w/o James DUVALL.

12. Amelia, w/o John MARK.

13. Joseph PURDY.

14. Cynthia, w/o George MARK (Note: possibly a brother of John MARK)

Note:  w/o = stands for "wife of"

There was also a Henry PURDY family living in Anne Arundel Co., MD, at

the same time.

Hope this helps with your PURDY research. It should keep you going for

awhile. I have not attempted to research the line further since I'm not

absolutely sure this Rebecca BURGEE (m. Edmund PURDY) is related to my

ggg.grandfather Thomas BURGEE, Sr.  But, it is quite likely she is

related since there was only one known BURGEE family in Frederick Co. at

the time. If you come up with anything further, please let me know,

because I am accumulating information on this line just in case I can

prove a tie to my family.

If any other Frederick researchers have additional information on this

PURDY family, especially the Rebecca BURGEE family, please chime in and

help us solve the puzzle.  Thanks.

Good luck and happy ancestor hunting.

There are numerous Purdys in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel Co.:

Joseph or one of his brothers could easily be your Joseph's parent -

date wise.  He is the only Joseph mentioned.  No Daniel.  I don't have

any other sources for Anne Arundel - you might track down that homepage
