Buffalo NY Obituary
Mary Jane Purdy, wife of
Samuel, daughter of Erastus Sparrow
d. Mar 23, 1846, 25 years.
This Samuel Purdy was a well know horseman and obtained fame for
riding American Eclipse in a Long Island match race in 1823, and
he was inducted into the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame in 1970. The
people at the NMR have told me there is some indication that Sam was a NY
alderman, but I haven't confirmed this. Both Samuels were architects and house
builders. http://genforum.genealogy.com/purdy/messages/597.html
Erastus Sparrow Purdy was
the New York-born son of California's
Lieutenant-Governor and is buried
under a deteriorating obelisk with inscriptions that read "Erastus Sparrow
Purdy Pacha, La Société Khédivale de Géographie." He died in Cairo
in June 1881 with the lofty
title of Pasha implying he had attained the rank of General
in the Ottoman Sultan's
army. See: http://www.egy.com/landmarks/99-04-15.shtml
