My Purdy Family History Search

1. My husband’s 3rd great grandfather was Harnden EDDY (1796-1881). His wife’s name was Nancy PURDY (The Eddy Family In America 1930 Genealogy by Ruth Story Devereaux Eddy, Boston, MA, 1930; p. 252). Nancy was born June 01, 1797 and died September 06, 1878.  They had 11 known children. They lived and died in Haldimand Twp., Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada. She and Harnden are buried in Eddystone Cemetery, Northumberland Co, Ontario, Canada. Census information shows they were both born in the U.S.

2. Harnden’s sister, Dorcas EDDY married a Benjamin PURDY (probably a brother to the above Nancy).

3. Harnden’s uncle, Bays Manchester EDDY who married Asenieth HONEYWELL, had a daughter Amy who married a William PURDY. This William definitely had at least two sisters, Elizabeth and Belinda who married Philomen FERGUSON and John FERGUSON respectively. Also a Polly PURDY who married ? BURNS may also be a sister. (The widowed Polly Burns and the widowed Elizabeth Ferguson were visitors at John & Belinda Ferguson's residence in Cramahe Twp on the 1861 census. The usual residence for both of the widows is shown as Haldimand Twp., Northumberland Co, Ontario, Canada.) A recent discovery has uncovered William PURDY’s parents as “D. and P. PURDY” born in New York. We have found a Daniel and Polly Purdy in Haldimand Twp. as early as 1802. Polly’s maiden name may have been “Eastman”.

4. In the diary of Susan Prentice PURDY, wife of Hiram Eddy PURDY (son of William and Amy PURDY), a Daniel PURDY (c. 1815-1897) is mentioned.  This Daniel married (1) Julia LeMain and had at least 9 children (2) Sophia Lewis (widow of Daniel’s brother Archelaus PURDY (1810-bet. 1855-1859).

5. Both #3 and #4 families are found in Fond du Lac Wisconsin, then possibly Missouri, then definitely Iowa, and definitely Minnesota.

·        1853 in Forest Twp. Fond du Lac Co, Wisconsin (marriage of William and Amy’s daughter, Narcissi PURDY to Oliver COOK March 11, 1853).

·        1855 in Forest Twp. Fond du Lac Co, Wisconsin (marriage of William and Amy’s son, Hiram Eddy PURDY to Susan J. Prentice on January 26, 1855)

·        1858 in Forest Twp, Fond du Lac Co, Wisconsin (birth of Harriet PURDY, dau. of Daniel and Julia PURDY)

·        1859 - Missouri? poss. Shannon Co (land record for a William Purdy of St. Louis Co., MO on Aug. 1,1860- Sec30/ Twp31-N  Range 6-W)

·        1862 - Mahaska Co, IA (marriage of William and Amy’s daughter Polly PURDY to Alfred Church in May 11, 1862).

·        1874 - Kossuth Co, IA (diary of Susan Prentice PURDY)

·        1875 – Calhoun Co, IA (diary of Susan Prentice PURDY)

·        1876 - 1880 - Mower Co, MN (Obituary of William and Amy PURDY)

Another PURDY who may be part of the above families is Chester PURDY, born c. 1821 who was a witness at the marriage of Stephen SMITH, to Marier (Maria) FERGUSON on  Sep. 4, 1849. [this is daughter of Philemon FERGUSON & Elizabeth PURDY]  Wit. Chester PURDY and Belinda FERGUSON [Belinda is the sister of Elizabeth PURDY FERGUSON and William PURDY].  He was also a witness at the marriage of James PORTER, widower, to Sarah PURDY, spinster in Haldimand Twp. Jan. 1, 1850 witnesses John WIMBLES & Chester PURDY, both of Haldimand.  The 1851 census shows a Chester and wife Mary (WATTS?). Chester married (2) Elizabeth HARNDEN about 1869. They had a daughter Caroline PURDY b. February 13, 1870.  Caroline married Philo EDDY b. August 27, 1861.  This Philo was a grandson of Harnden EDDY and Nancy PURDY.

Based on the above information, we know that Benjamin (b. 1792) and Nancy (b. 1797) were probably siblings, and Elizabeth (b. 1800), William (b. 1801), Belinda (b. 1806) and maybe Polly (b. c. 1802) were definitely siblings, and Archelaus (b. 1810), Daniel (b. 1815), and possibly Chester (b. 1821) were siblings.  And the parents of Daniel, Archelaus, William, Belinda, Elizabeth and Polly were probably Daniel (c. 1774- aft. 1845) and Polly (Eastman?) Purdy. We might also add Benjamin and Nancy as the municipal assessments of Haldimand Twp. show children born prior to 1800.

If anyone has any information on any of these families, please e-mail me at mailto:corbeil@bellsouth.net
