To all of you patient people out there who contacted me regarding lookups in the 4th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Roster (please note...CAVALRY NOT INFANTRY):

I profusely apologize for any delay in responding. I get 15-20 requests a day on various things I am able to provide lookups for and my backlog is growing. Each one of these requests takes anywhere from 10-60 minutes to research so I think this has become a full-time job. This is totally VOLUNTEER on my part. Some people think I am providing a service....NOT!! If I were, I would be charging you for my time. I wish I could spend 24 hours a day on this project but business and family tend to get in the way. So, please be patient....I have not forgotten you.

See "Why aren't you answering your e-mail?" in FAQs

Please do NOT send me requests regarding GENERAL lookups..."My ggrandfather served in the Civil War" or "Would you lookup any Smiths". If you don't know which regiment he served in, I can only help you by possibly giving you a contact name for that particular regiment otherwise I CANNOT help you. If he served in the 4th OVC, I will gladly look him up but general requests will probably go unanswered....sorry. If you know which regiment he served in other than the 4th OVC, (or the 22nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry) see  Regimental Contacts.

For those of you who requested a lookup but are not sure whether your ancestor served in this regiment PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:

Your best bet to locate any ancestors who served in the Civil War in OHIO is the "Roster Index for Ohio". It can be located at the Ohio History Center in Columbus, OH. This book is an alphabetical listing of all soldiers who served in OHIO. It points to the correct volume of rosters. You may be able to find one at your local library or local FHC.

Click here for a listing of the Latter Day Saints Family History Centers in your area.

The Ohio Historical Society address:
1982 Velma Avenue
Columbus, OH 43211-2497
Phone: 800/686-1545 or 614/297-2332.
614/297-2510 Archives-Library

The Ohio Historical Center is located just off of I-71 on 17th Avenue (exit 111) about 4 miles north of downtown Columbus, OH. A gold mine of information if you are doing research in Ohio. I have been there twice in the last year! If you're really into this stuff, It is well worth a trip.

You can also write to them and for a small fee they will do research for you. Go to: Ohio Historical Society / Archives-Library / for information. Call first to check fees. (Simple lookups are about $3.00 plus maybe some copying fees- $.25 per page). Ask them to look up your ancestors name in the Roster Index and send you a copy of the appropriate page from the Roster. This will give you all the information that is available on the Civil War roster. It will only tell you following:

Name
Company
Date entered service
Rank
Age at the time of entering service
Date mustered out or left service
Promotions

Once you have this information you can request information from the National Archives see the following site: National Archives

Paper copies of Civil War military service and pension records can be ordered by mail using one NATF Form 80 for each soldier and each type of file. You can obtain the NATF Form 80 (limit 6 per order) by providing your name and mailing address to inquire@nara.gov. Be sure to specify "Form 80" and the number of forms you need. Or you can also obtain the NATF Form 80 by writing to:

National Archives and Records Administration,
Attn: NWDT1
700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20408-0001

Another great site for Ohio Researchers is the Ohio Death Index On-Line (deaths from 1913-1937).  If you find someone you can request a copy of the death certificate on-line. (about $3.00)

Donna Speer Ristenbatt has put together an excellent page on "Finding your Civil War Ancestor".  She goes into more depth on how to complete the NATF Form 80 and using the 1890 Federal Population Special Census of Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Widows of the Civil War.

For those of you who asked specifically about the 4th, I PROMISE to get back to you.

Good luck in your searching! Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding the above.
