What if I would like to copy your information?

This article is not intended as a substitute for legal advice.

This site may be freely linked to but not duplicated in any way without my consent. Background and graphics are the property of Karin Corbeil.

Feel free to use the information on this site in your own research, but out of courtesy to the author, PLEASE use some kind of notation to the source (either the primary source or the webpage you got the information from).  You should always document with a source if it is not your own original material.  If you take information from these webpages to write a book and then earn money from the publication of that book, then we have problems.

But to avoid any complications, if there is something on this site that you would like to copy and distribute or publish on your website your best bet is just e-mail me with your request.  Or just link from your site to mine. As long as there is no profit involved you are generally safe.

With the advent of electronic media and internet publishing, the debate on copyright exclusivity has reared its ugly head with legalese such as "derivative rights", "fair use". Legislators are only now starting to address the whole range of copyright issues created by the electronic age. Under the United States' Copyright Act the basis for it was to protect the creator of a published work and giving him/her all rights in that creation.

How do you get a copyright?

Nothing more than putting the following notice on the title/cover page of your document PRIOR to publishing and registration:

© 1999, Your Name OR Copyright 1999, Your Name

You are NOT required to register the copyright with the copyright office.  But you certainly can register for a small fee of $25. For necessary forms and additional information, write: Register of Copyrights, Library of Congress, U.S. Copyright Office 101 Independence Ave., S.E., Washington DC 20559-6000.
