Rootsweb
Rootsweb is a company that amongst other things hosts a large number of mailing lists related to genealogy. Whatever your research interests are, whether it be a particular area of the world, a topic that you are interested in or that surname you are researching, there is a list that probably covers it.
As a members of such a mailing list you can send messages to the list and all members will receive a copy of it. Likewise, any messages that a member posts, you will receive a copy of it. Some of these lists are quiet and may only receive about five messages a day, while others are more active and the number of messages going through it can easily reach 100 per day.
All lists also have a message board that go with the list. On a message board you can post a message and anyone also viewing the board will see your message. Anyone can view the message boards, but you do need to be a member of Rootsweb if you want to put a message on the board, or to reply to the message.
On some boards, messages posted to the board will automaticaly be relayed to the related list. This happens with my four lists as I also administer the boards that go with them. However there are a number of boards where the messages will not be passed onto the lists.
Remember, to post or reply to messages to the boards you do need to be a member of rootsweb. One membership will give access to all message boards. To send or receive message from a particular list, you do need to be a member of that list. And you can join any lists without becoming a member of Rootsweb.
Rootsweb also hosts a number of other projects such as the transcription of the British Birth, Marriage and Death index and there are also links to other good genealogy site.
Access to Rootsweb or membership to any lists is free.

I am also the administrator for three such lists on Rootsweb. This means that I am responsible for ensuring that theses two lists run properly and to help members with any problems. Also, where possible, I will give suggestions to members for any query they may post to the lists.
