Unless someone has done the research on the Ling family genealogy already, I'm afraid the burden of this research rests upon your time and effort. With the presumption that your family clan may have come from one of the Sze Yup districts in Guangdong Province of China, you may want to start by typing in your surname Ling at the following link http://www.c-c-c.org/villagedb/search.cgi which will provide the names of 2 villages with the Ling surname. Unfortunately, I believe the website database currently only offers villages in Toishan and Hoiping Districts, with Sunwui and Enping Districts forthcoming in the near future. With any sort of luck, perhaps your village is one of the 2 offered on the website. Verify this with relatives and with whatever records you may have (e.g., old letters and official documents). If one is verified as your ancestral village, you could then perhaps plan a trip to the village to seek out long-lost relatives and to look for a genealogy book (called a "jook po" or "zupu" in Mandarin) on the Ling family name. If you can get your hands on the "jook po", much of your genealogical information will be contained in it, but you may need to get it translated because it will be written in Chinese. Good luck on your genealogical research.
