The most correct meaning of Ang would be "Red". I have heard of many people with similar surnames change their naem to Ang, during and after the Cultural Revolution. A possible meaning of Tang is "insect" - During the 12th Century, many of the people around the Yangtze River adopted the surname Tang, because they believed it to protect them from pestilence. Let me know if there is yet another possibility of a variation of your grandad's name. For example, if his surname is pronounced 'hiang', there is a possibilty that your ancestors are from the Yuk tribe in the Gobi Desert.
