If I'm not mistaken, from the way you said it, your surname in mandarin is pronounced as 'Ding', which character looks something like the letter T right? Well, from my hometown in Sitiawan, Malaysia, Ting is a very common surname. However, it's pronounciation in Mnadarin is 'Chen'. Ting is a variation of the surname 'Chen' in Foochow dialect.
