i think it's a translation of Chinese surname Li3, means plum. There's no Vietnamese with distance chinese ancestry with surname Ly because in 13th century all Ly's were converted to Nguyen by order of the king Tran, who usurped the throne of the Ly. All Lys in Vietnam have immediate chinese ancestry from GuangDong province.
Lai is a cantonese pronunciation of Li2, means black. In Vietnamese is Le^. I don't think that's your family name. Hope this helps.
